What's the point of a small nod (upwards) right before a long range blink on nurse

Because looking even partially down can at best make your blink shorter and at worst yeet you into the basement or onto a lower floor. Even a slight decrease in range can throw off your muscle memory.
Looking up has no negative effects unless there's a higher elevated floor at the destination of your blink.
By flicking up you make sure you're not looking even 1 degree "down" instead of straight ahead.

Just to maximize your range. You don't have to look up. It's just to make sure you get the maximum range.
