Why have footsteps became bassicly impossible to hear?
Just looked at some old clips and footstep audio is significantly clearer and more audible than today's footsteps. I feel like i barely hear survivors compared to a couple years ago.

Audio in this game in general is just inconsistent and buggy if I'm being honest.

Wrong.

The Devs have slowly nerfed survivor sound with each update. They made a mistake when plague released and adjusted it to far and people noticed and complained.
They covered it up saying it was a bug and later made a post saying they have "adjusted" the sound instead of FIXED the sound and it has been quiet/ getting quieter ever since.
Some more recent nerfs to sound happened when custom chase music started being made. The sounds survivors make is muted when chase music starts so they can make quiet chase themes and not have the killer gain an advantage. They also decided to mute survivors when they use a flashlight for some reason.

Yep they changed the audio a lot of times and somehow breaking footsteps and dying survivors cries in the process (also breathing). So unless you have a very expensive pair of headphones and/or a good mixing audio software you will be deaf as a molerat.

I can force my sound blaster to mute all sound behind and beside me while amplifying the sound Infront of me and still can't hear footsteps, only whimpers.
It isn't playable, but was interesting to see just how much they have muted survivors.

Mmm are you sure about that? now im curious 😅
I would swear that i hear footsteeps while chasing survivors, and its not like i have a very expensive audio system, i just have a generic pair of headphones and a mixing audio software that came with my motherboard called Nahimic which is not bad.

Survivor sounds have been gradually nerfed over the past while.

You do know that the survivors are still affected by that bug that makes them silent right?

About the time of Oni's release they decided to change how chase music interacts with ambient sound, specifically survivors footsteps. They wanted to give survivors the opportunity to escape chases and didn't think about how ridiculous strong that is. Even a moment's confusion on the killers part means the difference between a chase ending or continue for another 3 predropped pallets.

This is pretty accurate. They just kinda "broke" like ages ago and never fixed it.
At this point I just consider it a nerf because I doubt it will ever be fixed.

This is what scares me the most with the Lucky Break buff they're proposing. Combined with Iron will survivors will literally disappear as soon as they break LoS while injured. It's silly... like killers can afford that wasted time.

Because the devs somehow manage to break the sounds every patch.

And yet poor Demo still stomps around like Godzilla.
Actually, if you give Godzilla's breath weapon to Demo, I'm happy! :)

Sounds about right I play another game called hunt: showdown and the audio of that game makes this game look like the audio was made by a bunch of incompetent people.

It's been like that for a few years, as you've mentioned. I guess the devs want it to be a feature of the game. Imagine if other game developers got away with robbing players of one of their senses for basically no reason.

I was wondering if it was just me that was struggling with sounds lately. Guess not! I thought it was because I changed my headphones.

It's pretty annoying,not gonna lie.
Getting blinded at a pallet used to be a free hit for me because i was able to track their sounds while being blinded very easily.
But now it's waaaaay way harder.

Devs tweak sound, with results and bugs that screw killer over, but dont fix it back to the pre-bugged state.
Rinse and repeat for atleast 3 times, could be more by now as I stopped counting.
"Just track by sound" doesnt work as an argument in this game.
Normally killers shouldnt need headphones and deafening dound volume to hear surv breathing through a single wall... or survs more than 5m away.

Engine updates.
I believe version 1.4.0 was the first update that broke all audio. The Unreal Engine update introduced sound occlusion which hasn't worked right since.
Sound is getting better. Footsteps were completely silient for years but you can hear them now. Mostly outside chase as chase music is so much louder than before.

Just wait for the new lucky break when you hit a survivor and they break line of site and you can't hear them at all and lose them. Times that by 4 because all survivors are running it and all gens are done before you get a hook.
