How do you tell when the killer is on the same floor as you?

When you're working on a generator in a two-floor map, how do you know when to commit and when to start running?

Example: the upstairs one-man gen in Hawkins, next to the hole you can drop down. It seems like survivors always know to commit while I'm looking around downstairs, but move away in plenty of time when I start heading up the stairs.

If there's a trick, I don't know it. For hawkins, I generally base it off of the last killer action. If he just hit someone and I'm working that gen, then I assume he's on the first floor. If he just hooked someone and his terror radius pops up, I run. Also, kindred can really clue you in on this.

Otherwise, I think it's just a guess. Some survivors are super cautious and just walk to the nearby getaway-drop every time the terror radius gets close.
