Tin Foil Hat with Stranger Things chapter. Sorry for the novel
Not sure if this has been talked about before but this is my theory as far as i know.
Theory - The entity and the mindflayer are one and the same. Or. The same species at the very least.
Evidence -
1) Visually they are very similar. Black with tentacles. Although the mindflayer seems more shadowy in form, the resemblance is more than passive.
2) They both are multi-dimensional. In fact, neither are truly visable in our world (meaning the earths of DBD and ST). All interactions with the entity and the mindflayer occur in either the entity's realm, or the upside down.
3) Both the entity's realm and the upside down are replicas of worlds from outside the influence of the entity and the mindflayer
4) Portals are used to move between the real world and the other side (using this phrase to describe the entity's realm and the uoside down).
5) In both instances, the creatures open portals by choice, and bring people through them.
6) Portals to the upside down in stranger things were able to be opened by humans. In the blight's lore and in tome lore, we are introduced to cults who worship the entity. In blight's lore they seem to possess arcane powers and may possibly have succeeded in opening a portal. (Although it is conjecture i will go into more details a little later)
7) The mindflayer can control people and even augment physical attributes as seen with Billy. The entity augments killers and in many cases breaks their minds to serve it. It also wipes the minds of the survivors after every trial
8) Both can influence the actions of people away from the other side. We see that with Billy in stranger things and with Kate hearing the song, and possibly with the cults of the entity. (Maybe even with plague?)
9) Demogorgon. He is a creation of the mindflayer. Why would the mindflayer allow the demogorgon to be in service of something else? Especially if the Demos task is feeding the mindflayer? (Not given the purpose of the demogorgon in the show. So conjecture here) I would argue that the mindflayer didn't lend the entity the demogorgon, but that the entity created the demogorgon in the first place.
These are most of the similarities. I would like to expand on some things though.
Both creatures use portals. The Cults from the DBD lore worship the entity. The question is what came first. The cult with some vague ideas that the entity latched onto, or the entity revealing itself to create the cults?
While no specific answer in the lore appears, we can make assumptions based on the first mention of the cult, where what seems to be a cop is investigating the cult. Unless it is implied that that person was felix or elodie, then it is someone we haven't met yet. Possibly from a different dimension or universe. (If im not mistaken that is how you can have multiples of the same survivor an a single trial?)
So if the investigator is from a different dimension or universe or world then that would mean that there are multiple cults. Which would imply that the entity reveals itself to people. Setting up groups to groom potential survivors and killers?
The entity is considered timeless. So how far back in history does the entity and it's influence go? What if Adiris wasn't worshipping a benevolent and holy god? What if she herself was being groomed to worship the entity, by her teachers who were agents of the entity themselves?
In ST it shows that people can travel back and forth between realms. In DBD it has been hinted that some people have escaped the entity. So why is it easier in ST to escape? I think because the people in ST opened the portal which caught the mindflayer off guard. The entity lures people in on it's own terms. In ST they went in on their own. The mindflayer wasn't ready for the assault and thus wasn't fully prepared.
Last point. In terms of lore, it wasn't really until after ST that the devs made the conscious decision to expand on the story. To flesh out the universe. What if, we didnt just get 2 survivors and 1 killer. What if we got 2 survivors, 1 killer, and the Mindflayer?
Tl:Dr i may be crazy but this all makes sense to me.

I actually thought of this same theory with a friend a little while ago. I can definitely see it working.

This is a really great theory and I believe it now.

It's been in my mind for awhile now just for some reason the pieces clicked today while not thinking about it at work. Weird how that happens lol
