Why new and casuals struggle
It's very attractive, horror fans jump on board, you can play with friends, it's different, so why is the player base so low, 5 years in?
Very frustrating experience, I've never seen so much rage quit.
New players and casuals struggle to learn everything (keeps growing, changing). Many frustrations come from newer players not understanding why they are being discovered, how they are being revealed, why did they go down with one hit?
I've played games as Legion where survivors just fall somewhere because they didn't realize they needed to mend. I dropped a Bill by hatch and he crawled away... I had to pick him up again and drop him ON THE HATCH.
You expect these people to know how BBQ works or, which Killers could possibly be running reveal add-ons or, how to counter it? This is why the player base doesn't grow. You cant just jump in and play, there is a sea of Perks, Killers, add-ons, that will make your life miserable unless you understand them.
If we want to retain players and grow, the mechanics need to be more transparent. Hidden reveal mechanics are probably the worst. Survivors are told when they become Exposed, they should be notified on Reveal too.
Not everyone is a sweaty Meta gamer, most people just want to have fun and get spooked.

Or, better yet, have a matchmaking system that actually works without removing a good chunk of the game's skill cap.

It doesn't need transparency because those people you're speaking of don't care if they're good at the game or not because it's either not their main game or they don't invest enough time in games to really care, the new players who get sucked in will always take time to learn those sort of things and improve, the problem is the new players run into red ranks on both sides and get slaughtered in game and taunted in the chat so much that they drop the game all together and say it's not worth getting a headache or In a argument over a game they're trying to learn, this community is full of egotistical ######### and it is what drives majority of new players away with the exception of those who thrive for the drama

the biggest problem, is
- the lack of MMR, so returning 3K hour players can get match with 5 min i-just-did-the-tutorial player, guess who is going to have a most terrible experience? (they are working on it but as long as its not implemented the problem will persist)
- the grind, holy #########, the grind

Running almost perkless as a new survivor or killer would make me question whether I would want to play...the grind is ridiculous

Wall hacks in nearly any other game is called a cheat and, that's how many people feel when they try to play and can't seem to hide, cheated. It's natural for new players to try to hide and they get creamed.
Reveals are a part of this game, a notification on Reveal is a fair trade, I think.

If not enough of tutorial and explaining game mechanics won't chase them away, the grind 100% will

Ha ha... yeah.
I just started around mid-late last year, and I can tell you, it is an actual nightmare. Plus, I usually got paired with green and purple ranks for God knows why.
But then again, I was able to deal with green ranks fairly effectively at the start, so maybe matchmaking wasn't exactly trying to screw me over.

Because a lot people come in expecting this to be stealthy type of horror game. But they quickly find out you have people who actually run towards the killer and chases them at times not the opposite. Anyway based on my friends experience you either like this game or don't. Because most of my friends only play this with SWF. They don't even touch the game solo, never at all. And paying even as killer even less. only 1 of my friend who play this plays killer only to do challenges. That is why I don't think a lot of resident evil fans will stick around. Since RE is more of a shooter type of horror, were as silent hill is more of a stealthy type of horror game. And even a lot of the silent hill fans did not stick around. Also it's basically if you like asymmetric multiplayer games to.
