before downloading the beta, i purchased the beach dwight skin. upon opening the beta, it was no longer on my account. is this happening to other people? is there a way to fix it?

This is normal as the Beta takes your current state from a few days before and not the most recent state. Once you leave the beta/PTB and join the normal game again your game will be exactly how it was before joining the Beta.
everything you purchase or earn during the Beta will also stay there btw.

that's weird because i still have my 1,000 cells from 'before' i bought the dwight skin.

why is it weird?
on the beta branch, you never purchased the Dwight skin so your auric cells are still there
on the live branch you purchased the skin and the auric cells are gone
or did I not get it right?

beta uses a week old savefile
