Why is shelter woods still a thing?
Hands down the worst map in the game.
Objectively, it is terrible. Huge circle of dead zones with nothing but generic jungle gyms and pallets
Aesthetically, it is terrible. Literally just a big circle with stones and trees.
Fun factor, its terrible. Its huge and just outright boring.
At least haddonfield/hawkins/midwich are visually pleasing and unique. If shelter woods were a biscuit, it would be a stale oat cake.

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed that they did nothing to it. I mean, they balanced Ormond with the Realm Beyond-Update, so there would have been a chance to do something to Shelter Woods.
In general, I hope that Shelter Woods and Rotten Fields get some love in a future Update. You simply see how old those Maps are, despite the updated graphics. Both would need some form of Main Building (ideally on a high ground on Shelter Woods, because this is one of the Maps without a spot for Balanced Landing (except for the Basement Stairs), and I think that every Map should have at least one BL-Spot).

To be honest, I liked the old Shelter Woods. It might has nothing other than generic tiles and pallets, but the "creepy forest" aesthetic combined with the old Fog was so damn good that, in my opinion, one thing compensated the other.
Now, it just looks bad. That is all.
By the way, if anyone wants to refresh their memory:

The woods need to shelter somewhere.
Please.
Have some compassion for the woods.

I don't hate Shelter Woods. It's design is boring but at least it isn's bad gameplay wise, unlike it's sibling. Yes, I am talking about you Suffocation Pit.
0 -
Yeah, it's certainly a map that pleases no-one but Blight and Oni mains.
1 -
Not bad gameplay wise? The map hardly has any resources for survivor.
3 -
The number of pallets on shelter woods isn't any different than most other maps. They can be easier to miss when they largely only spawn in rock loops. There's also 5 jungle gym spawns, the only thing that can feel bad is when you get unlucky and they are all LT walls.
1 -
im no fan of the game for gameplay, but it is beautiful as far as its aesthetics go.
1 -
Shelter woods is the same as half of the maps in this game. Unbalanced trash for one side or another
0 -
Old Hillbilly the memories of when there were more of us. And we were on top of the world.

I was surprised they didn't touch it when they reworked MacMillan, and it's one of the reasons I have so little faith in the reworks. The map's got nothing for survivors - it's highly exposed and easy to see survivors from a distance, it's got no main building, it's got barely any pallets and most of them are in unsafe loops, it's got no windows outside of the jungle gyms and the jungle gyms aren't especially chainable. I've always considered it the most killer-sided map in the game.

My main complaint iosnt that it is unbalanced, undoubtedly there are maps which are far worse than this in terms of game balance.
It is that it is just horrible. Utterly depressing, uninspiring, a circular brown void of despair.
0 -
Was it always that dark?
1 -
Its no fun for many killers either, given it has the largest surface area of any map. Its certainly the most oni-sided map in the game.
0 -
The good ole' days when you would actually see Billy on higher ranks. Nowadays he is as rare as a unicorn.
0 -
It was never bright, I suppose. But not always like that. Here, lets take a look at some random screenshots:
1 -
It has a high surface area, but extremely low relative distance. If you notice a survivor on Midwich or the Game, or even on the second story of the saloon or through the window of the coal tower, they may be technically 5 meters from you, but you need to take a 10-15 second walk to reach their location. Second-story buildings, fences, convoluted lines of railing like in Rancid Abattoir, maps that are elongated or have protruding areas instead of being a big square - all of these things make a map 'larger' to traverse than it really is. Shelter Woods' lack of structures makes it a straight shot from any point A to point B. Similar-sized maps like Disturbed Ward, Haddonfield, Swamp, and Gas Heaven all take more time to cover because there's buildings with narrow paths, walls, and general Stuff in the way.
Rotten Fields is the same design philosophy, but at least the killer can't see anything on 75% of that map.
1 -
Valid point, valid point. I still hate it on killer though.

Man yesterday I got two L and T walls next to each other, went down and got tunneled. There were no pallet around, just one big deadzone except those two jungle gyms. I never run DS and my teammates didn't run BT, so I got tunneled out of the game super quick cause I had nowhere to run to. :c

I actually don’t normally agree with your views on the graphics but that last Freddy shot actually looks really good
0 -
Yeah, we all have our own opinions when it comes to the graphics, but I am glad to see you agree with me on that Freddy one. The old Dream World had a lot of Fog, and was much better than the version we have today.
0 -
Freddy has just lost all that made him Freddy really. You could probably give his power to any other killer and it wouldn’t feel out of place.
2 -
Precisely! One of the countless reasons why his rework must be reverted.
0 -
maybe if the new shelter woods was darker it would better.
sure you can't see anything but you also can't loop anywhere other than three tiles so it balances out
0 -
Perhaps, but I would prefer to have its OG version back. Same goes to every single reworked map.
0 -
It is a crap map for sure. But it is only the worst map depending on what you're playing. When i'm playing most killers I can't think of a worst map than haddonfield or possibly the game. When i'm playing survivor then yes dead woods is one of the worst.
0 -
I've heard you talk about the realm beyond, but other than the breakable walls I don't really see a problem with it?
Do you mind telling me what your problem with the realm beyond is so I can understand your side?
0 -
Shelter Woods is hands down the worst map in the game? "Shelter Woods" is a really weird way of saying "Dead Dawg Saloon, both swamp maps, and the general redesign of Coldwind from a spooky cornfield to a happy sunny garden of brightness and love".
1 -
WHAT THE HELL GAME IS THIS??? I WANT TO PLAY IT!!!
1 -
Always preferred the old Macmillan maps. The blue tint is better than the current grey one imo.
1 -
This is an opinion and kind of just a poor question. Maybe just state what you think should be changed, so you are being productive and less whining. There are complaints about several maps and people act like this is a huge dev team. It is not. they are clearly more focused on aesthetics and new content over redoing old content, though they recently stated plans to update maps. Be patient or be constructive.

I like the fog on these screenshots.
It is not so foggy anymore, right?
1 -
Ah, my friend, I want to play it too. I want to return. I would do anything to return.
1 -
Not, not anymore. Now it looks bad. It doesn't look right.
0 -
When did they dramatically reduce the fog so much? And why? I just realized that I never even notice the existence of fog anymore. Isn't "the fog" a whole theme in this game? "See you in the fog" and all that? More like "see you because there isn't any fog".
1 -
It is hard to explain, but I will try.
The Realm Beyond is nothing more than a failure, a total mess. First of all, no one asked for it. No one wanted updated maps because the maps were very good already. And this... monster came, destroying everything we loved.
It will be better if I give you some examples. Take Disturbed Ward:
Its original version looks gorgeous, "a beautiful place to get murdered at". Nowadays, this map looks like an empty wasteland? It disheartens me.
Another example, Autohaven Wreckers:
Just look at it. The green tint paired with the old lighting makes it a perfect map! Now it is just an awful map where you can't see anything. Those maps were classics, we were used to them, we loved them. The Realm Beyond ruined everything.
I would do anything to return to the game I once knew.
Anything.
1 -
I will tell you, my friend, maps used to look so MUCH better. The creepy ambience was actually a thing, and that obviously includes the Fog. Something so important to the game, which is lacking nowadays.
I will never understand why did they remove it. I will never understand why they decided to rework our maps, which never required a rework to begin with.
All I know, is that I want it back.
1 -
Same, my friend. Same. And that goes to every single reworked map, in my opinion.
0 -
I've been hearing that they've been reworking the maps so that they're all relatively similar on the PC and the new consoles. I couldn't care less about the new consoles so if that's true, it bugs me. I've only been playing the game for a few months but in those few months I got a bit of experience with the thick fog and I loved it. This game is way too sharp and clean and visible now. As far as I'm concerned the maps didn't need reworking, all the whiny complaints that the game looked like "a PS2 title" were just 4K ultra HD 90 inch monitor perfectionists. The game looked fine. The game looked better. These new maps with their open areas and the ability to see clear across them...meh.
1 -
Well said, my friend, very well said.
I am glad to know that you did manage to enjoy some of the maps before it was too late. I've been playing since late 2018, maps back then were not as perfect as their 2016 / 2017 counterparts, but they looked so much better than the ones we currently have.
You are 100% correct, the game looked good. The maps were one of the countless reasons why I fell in love with this game back in 2018.
And now...I lost my favourite maps and I don't even have words to express how much I miss them.
0 -
To be honest it scares me. They tinker with this game so much - and in general I think that's a good thing, it shows care on the developer's part to keep supporting their game long after its release and trying to make improvements where they think it's necessary. But I really wish they would at least take a poll on some of these things. I hesitate to really like a character's appearance or the way a map plays or certain perks or whatnot because I'm worried that they'll just be taken away at some point.
I record all my matches and I've been kind of afraid to compare what my first month of gameplay looks like compared to how it looks now. It was startling passing by a match on old Coldwind the other day. I like the new Coldwind maps fine but yeah, I'd really like the old ones back please. And that's just one set of maps, more to come.
0 -
Was my favourite realm, now its one of my least favourites. Crotus and Ormond are better though. Farm is too light and I miss the yellow lol
0 -
It scares you? Well, it should.
I lost my favourite killer, and I lost my favourite maps. And it doesn't feel good when you want to play your favourite game but remember that what you loved is now gone.
Yes, the devs make some good changes from time to time, but most of them are not. Most of them are changes which the community doesn't want or doesn't approve of. And if the voice of community is not enough, then what is?
On the other hand, it is good that you've recorded your matches, as we all need a little taste of the good ole' days from time to time. That is why I watch some old videos every time I want to play DBD. Otherwise it gets difficult for me to enjoy my trials.

I miss everything! I just want my old maps back. From Lery's to Badham and Chapel. I want all of them back
Am I asking for too much?
0 -
Asylum / Chapel / Ormond / Temple...main buildings are complicate and fun to play.
Coal tower & Suffo pit main buildings are too simple.
Blood lodge & Azarov main building are just shack variations.
Mother Dwelling is the only map with 2 main simple buildings.
I think they should merge Coal tower & Suffo pit into 1 map, and remove Shelter wood. Same to Blood lodge & Azarov, and remove Wrecked yard. Also remove Rotten field
