To break it down in a easy to understand way:
DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. It basically works this way that someone sends a huge amount of requests to your IP (most likely your router since it's the only public IP you have) until the targeted device (the router) is no longer able to handle those requests and breaks down thus cutting your internet access off. It doesn't do permanent damage. All you have to do is to reboot the affected device and everything will be back up and running again if the DDoS attack stopped/does not start again.
By definition a DDoS requires attacks/requests from multiple (Distributed), different sources or else it would just be a DoS attack but since technology advanced pretty fast, almost every device is easily able to withstand a DoS (from a single point) attack so the only way to really DoS someone is to DDoS someone if that makes sense.

Quick update: The person who originally booted me off has now gathered their friends and I have not been able to play a single game since 7 PM EST.
I seem to have no choice but to involve the authorities.
