How do protection hits work exactly?

I've been IN LOVE with Forced Penance as of late, so I've got the gist down pat. However, in some cases such as PH's Punishment attack and Victor's Pounce, a protection hit isn't triggered. Does it only apply to basic attacks? It shouldn't, because I've seen clips of people getting protection stacks from Bear Traps and Deathslinger's spear. Does anyone have an explanation or is it bugged for some Killers?

Protection hits should work on killer powers from what I know of.

I believe a punishment from the damned won't trigger protection since it can technically hit multiple people in one blow so it wouldn't even be considered a "protection hit". I'm not too sure though...

Weird. I remember it did during the PTB, which paired extremely well with Forced Penance. Real shame if they did in fact change it.

A protection hit is when a survivor takes a hit near an injured/downed player. If everyone is healthy then no one is taking a protection hit.

*Edit to add survivors also need to be within certain distance near injured survivor, too far away and it won't be considered a protection hit.

It also counts hits taken when the killer is carrying someone i believe

For starters a survivor must be in the injured state for a nearby teammate to be capable of being awarded a protection hit. Protections have a 3 second cooldown before they can be awarded again and the max range from an injured survivor is a little over 30 feet.

It shouldn’t only be applying to basic attacks because you can take a cross map hatchet and be awarded a protection hit.. well I mean maybe forced penance requires basic attacks despite it not being in the description iirc but protection hits have changed a lot and been inconsistent over pretty much every patch.

You must be within 10 meters of another injured survivor for protections hits to count, being sent to injured or the dying state within 10 meters range of the other injured survivor will count as a protection hit.
