Perk diversity and how to change the meta.

Let's be honest! There are a lot of perks and builds that deserve and need more recognition, but the problem is the meta.

Gens still go by too fast, but gens really aren't the problem. I mostly see a lot of survivors run chase perks and second chance perks which promotes killers using more slowdown perks and vice versa.

Is there anyway to bring back perk diversity and not the same perks every single trial?

Not without addressing the core reasons each side uses them. It's boring to feel like you have to bring in slowdowns perks, just like it's boring to have to dedicate slots for bt and ds or whatever so you dont end up with 5 min games in either direction.

They WERE tweeking a handful of perks with each update for awhile, which seemed to show things were going in the right direction. I know surveillance and detective's hunch got changed for example which lead to more uses from both. They DID just buff up ironwill though, so... I dunno.

There'll always be a meta and people to complain about said meta.

Alot of the perks theyve gone back to rework were pretty god awful. Surveillance was basically in the running with monstrous shrine for worst perk and was basically useless until they reworked it. Can only hope they keep doin those reworks/tweeks.

I agree that most are decent but why take those when you can take a basic meta build and get more consistent results

I love running Gearhead and oppression on clown but I’d be lying if I were to say it’s better than ruin/undying or ruin/pop

Apologies. I didn’t meant to imply buffs aren’t warranted for many perks. They’re just not “awful” in their current states.

    Solo survivor here.

I kinda feel like I have to sacrifice diversity for winning, and I'm sure others feel the same. Sometimes I don't care, I want to run fun perks even if it makes me more likely to lose. Sometimes my games are so bad, I want to run the meta to just have ONE good game. Most of the time as a solo survivor, your teammates matter far more than your perks.

I used to run Small Game. Very niche, hardly used by anyone, and the devs nerfed it, so I'm back to exclusively meta perks. There's just no reason not to, and so many new perks are just crappy versions of perks that already exist. But the devs are on a schedule of new characters every three months, even if there's nothing worth adding to the game.

DS was destroyed, so now I run BT which affects the whole team every unhook, not just me if I'm tunneled. I think as a killer, I'd rather have one person with DS as opposed to more people running BT, but what choice do we have when now survivors are punished for playing the game?

I do not blame killers at all for running 2-3 slow down perks. It sucks as a survivor when you're matched with three level 19-20s, but those games are going to suck anyway.

Embarking on my Bad Perk University quest, causing me to explore and test perks I never would have dreamed of using otherwise, made me realize that many perks that are perceived as bad are really blown out of proportion. Even the absolute worst, bottom of the barrel perks like Up the Ante, I can see it useful in at least a couple fringe scenarios, it's all a matter of finding them. In the case of Up the Ante, the easiest way to make the perk better is not changing the perk itself, but reworking the way luck functions. I used to think Second Wind was pretty bad even after its buff, but after buying it from the shrine and giving it an honest try, it's not bad. I'd still rather use Inner Strength, but it's now another option I have. The important part of using a perk in a build or strategy in my mind is this: Is the perk fun to use? If it is, it doesn't really matter how bad it is, it's a moral victory to enjoy playing the game in spite of its frustrating elements. That's something I also set out to with my my series, to show players ways to spice up their matches and have a little more fun in their lives.

Only YOU can change Meta gaming.

When you let go of "winning" and find other reasons to play.

Some perks are good and most people just dont use them becuz of how the game is played nowadays. A killer camps and tunnels to try and win while the survivor just does gens. DS and BT are required, just like gen regression or slowdown is required

I like trying different perks when I play killer or with friends, but as a soloQ survivor I need a couple of slots reserved for Kindred to help with the unhooks & DS/BT (sometimes both but usually one at a time) to deal with tunnelling.

You either need to nerf the meta perks hard or buff the crappy perks up to be on par with the meta. I don't think buffing is a reasonable option because of how strong perks are on both sides. How do you make a perk beat pop? Borrowed Time? You can't unless the effect is so strong it makes it a competitor. I don't really want to imagine what kind of perks would need to be made to compete with the strongest perks.

I don't care about winning. I care about 'IMPROVING' while having 'FUN'

I would love to find a different and fun build with Blight, but because I'm not running slowdown gens get knocked out really quick.

Agreed, the comment was directed at those who sweat to win and, can't let go of the crutch perks or try something new.

Not until the cycle is broken on both sides.

Until gens don't go so fast that Killers feel like they have to run 3 gen regression perks, and until Survivors don't feel like they have to run 4 second-chance perks just to get a chance to play the game, it's not going to change.

The only way to change it, currently, is to just stop running those perks yourself, and, as another user put it, 'Play for something other then wins'.

My builds normally consists of 3 gen slowdown (normally PGTW, Thanatophobia, Surge, Eruption and Dying Light) perks and 1 tracking perk (Discordance or BBQ). Even if the devs buffs all the other perks that are normally considered bad, I don't see myself using other stuff until gens start going slower.

Every patch they make, they should be buffing at least one perk.
