DBD Forum Users Are Really Bad at Having Meaningful Discussions

Following at thread of mine from the other day, I noticed that DBD forums posters are really bad at engaging in any meaningful discussion, and it gets very annoying, and completely ruins many threads.

So-- with that being said, here are a few friendly suggestions when engaging with a topic so that discussions can be actually interesting, insightful, and on-topic.

  1. STAY ON TOPIC, PLEASE
    1. This is usually why the thread sucks. Someone starts an argument and the entire thread is just two people arguing. Whether you started it or not, quit arguing about something not on topic, take it to private messages. :)
  2. ACTUALLY READ THE POST
    1. It's actually extremely baffling how many times I run into people that don't read the contents of the discussion, just the title or a few words. I guarantee you many misunderstandings and points of contention would stop happening if people just took the time to actually read. You are engaging in a discussion by your own will. Please absorb all of the information presented.
  1. TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE VIEWPOINT OF OTHER SIDE
    1. This is like... basic Debate 101. Appealing to the other side either gives you opportunity to strengthen your argument or exposes the flaws in it. Instead of saying "I'm right," "No, I'm right," thus, turning things into a mere pissing contest of who can farm the most upvotes from the side that agrees with them, think about why people are presenting their argument and account for all of their points.

Such is the nature of forums.

Probably help if people stuck to one post on topic instead of spamming the forums with multiple posts on same topic. When one topic is getting spammed people stop reading what's inside past more than couple sentences and instead respond to title. If you want meaningful discussion don't have half dozen+ posts on the same topic.

Yup, that's the forums in a nutshell. Actually, scratch that, that's just the internet in a nutshell. :/

A corollary (of sorts) of 2 is that you have to put in some effort to make your comments readable. If you just have a long string of words with little to no punctuation and run-on sentences, or a massive wall of text, very few people (if any) are going to read it. It's a matter of showing basic respect for the person/people you're speaking with, IMO.

My favorite is when people take what you said out of context to fit a story they made up.

It's called main bias. Unfortunately a large majority of the forum posters are "mains" of either survivor or killer. Due to their limited exposure to both roles their viewpoints tend to be biased, hyperbolic, and full of inaccuracies. Whenever I see a post that says something like:

    "Survivors"

    "All Survivors"

    "Killers"

    "All Killers"

    "Why do all...survivor/killers"

... I just roll my eyes and know that we are in for yet another vomit inducing circle jerk thread where one side vigorously strokes the ego of one another.

A lot of the forum posts are simply people whining about their loss and trying to blame others instead of taking any responsibility for their own game play. They like to blame perks, maps, and let's not forget the big ol' boogeyman that is SWF. If these forums had an actual ignore/block function it would make browsing them so much more enjoyable and maybe allow for actual conversations on topics without all the BS and main bias.

The forum (including me) deserves to read this.

When someone posts something like TUNNELLING BAD! My fun is ruined and i should be compensated while you get punished. No amount of explaining or evidence is going to change their mind.

    So why bother?

We are just beating a dead horse at this point and it is clear the real developers don't see anything we post unless the filter lets them see it so meme and rage away!

I tried that, didn’t work. Entire text window was gone.

I know people have a million reasons why blocking in-game wouldn't work, but it's bizarre to me that blocking on the forums isn't a thing. Sometimes it's the best way to avoid conflict.

Whataboutism is the biggest occurrence around here, unfortunately.

People who don't do research & those that can't support their claims annoy me the most.
