Chapter ?- A Hunger For War

Killer: The Wendigo

Background/Lore:

Kitchi Megedagik was always made for battle. As a child he had idolized the warriors of his tribe and trained everyday to join them. He outshone every one of his fellow warriors in battle, being the first to enter the conflict and the last to leave, always with an empty quiver or a bloody spear. At the young age of eighteen he had already become one of the most trusted men of the local war chief, leading dozens of men into battle against the white man.

During one bad season, the number of buffalo in the region was low. There were too many hunters looking for them- Kitchi’s tribe, the white men, and another tribe who mixed with the white men- half-breeds, untrustworthy and not of their land. This led to few rations among the tribe, and starvation was an imminent threat. It didn’t help that they were being pressured to move into a ‘reservation’, where their lands and methods would be restricted and controlled. Who were they to judge us, when they slaughtered our kind and pushed us from our ancestral homelands centuries ago? We were here first; we need to stand up for ourselves! Kitchi, against the orders of his tribal elders, gathered several of his closest friends and brothers-in-arms and set out to exact vengeance on the white man.

That summer, the rivers ran red with colonizer blood. Kitchi’s war party slaughtered dozens of unprepared soldiers, stealing their rations and weapons and burning their camps to the ground. Every victory was another step forward towards independence and freedom to return to the old ways. When the job was done, they would return as heroes to their tribe and be remembered as legends. Summer turned to fall, fall turned to winter, and with cold came a stop to their crusade.

The invaders learned not to leave the woods alone, so they boarded themselves up in impenetrable forts. Kitchi’s party soon ran out of rations and were left to freeze in the cold. With nearly all of the animals keeping to themselves or on the verge of extinction, morale was low and many began to question Kitchi’s dogma. Was it worth dying in the snow, to be away from their families? Kitchi was undeterred and invited any who questioned him to his tent. However, the day after meeting them they disappeared. Kitchi said there was a massive wolf that came and took their brothers away, but after half a dozen men disappeared the others grew suspicious. They stormed Kitchi’s teepee one night after talking over a measly dinner and were greeted with a horrifying sight.

The floor was decorated with bones, picked clean of flesh. Skulls were stacked in one corner, and a large pit containing several smaller bones and pieces was dug in the center. In front of it, Kitchi was tearing away pieces of flesh from a human arm. The warriors attacked, but were no match for Kitchi, who was the greatest of them. When they were all killed, he merely dragged them to his tent and kept them until they were all gone.

Months passed, and the tribe knew nothing of what had happened. Kitchi’s party were declared banished, and they were to be killed or sent as favors to the colonizers in hopes of peace. As the war party terrorized different encampments, the tribe elders spoke with their government for peace and the logistics of finally moving to a reservation. The night the treaties were signed, a huge celebration took place- it was a time for new beginnings of peace, happiness and the winter solstice. What they did not expect was the return of their brother Kitchi- or how his actions had changed him.

He was now a monstrous creature that tore through his kin and enemy alike. No arrow could pierce his skin, no bullet could put him down, and no shield could withstand his wrath and hunger. When dawn broke, he had destroyed the entire tribe and the visiting colonizers. No man, woman or child was spared from his vicious wrath. As he took the headdress of the war chief for himself, the cold gathered around him, freezing him more than ever before, until he looked up and saw more victims in the distance. It didn’t matter if they were dressed differently, nor the fact that they tried to take shelter in an abandoned fort or hide in red boxes. He saw them all, snarled as he smashed through their walls, and began the hunt once more.

Killer Overview:

The Wendigo is a ravenous Killer who hunts its prey with its skills as a Perfect Hunter. Its personal perks Survivalist, Mimicry and Scourge Hook: Self-Mutilation allow it to sneak up on its prey, sound like an ally and exact violence on those who want what they cannot have.

Difficulty Rating: Intermediate

Stats:

+Size: Medium

+Terror Radius: 24m

+Movement Speed: 110%, 4.4m/s

Weapon: Bone Claws (The flesh has been stripped away, now only held in place by darkness and skin, the bones of the fingers are split with antlers and claws.)

Mori: The Wendigo impales the Survivor on its left hand and raises it up above its head, then disembowels them with their right hand. They drop the Survivor as they lick their hands clean of blood.

Power: Perfect Hunter

The Wendigo has adapted to become the master of its territory, navigating difficult terrain while engaging in stealthy tactics and luring its prey to their doom. At the expense of its sight, its other senses have been sharpened to a perfection.

  • The Wendigo is blind and cannot see the environment beyond 8m in front of them.
    • The Wendigo can still see any Auras revealed to it.
      • When a Survivor walks or runs within 40m of the Wendigo, their location is revealed with Killer Instinct.
  • Survivors leave behind a Scent unique to each Survivor (Colors- Red, Pink, Orange and Purple) that is left behind in the Environment for the Wendigo to track. Scents fade after 15s. The Wendigo can see which Scent belongs to which Survivor in the Status HUD.
    • Survivors who interact with Objectives leave behind their Scent(s) around the Object for 30s.
  • Survivors who make noise interacting with Objectives within range have their Auras shown to the Wendigo.

+Special Ability: Prowl

  • Press the Active Ability button to activate Prowl. While activated, the Wendigo loses its Red Stain and Terror Radius while moving at 100% movement speed. After a successful Attack or Swipe, Prowl goes onto cooldown (30s).
    • Prowl deactivates after being stunned or blinded by a Survivor.
  • While Prowl is activated, the Wendigo can walk on walls, ceilings, and over objects in the terrain at a reduced speed (-10%).

+Special Attack: Swipe

  • Hold the Attack button to charge a Swipe (1.5s). The Wendigo leaps forward and attacks all Survivors within a 2m range of where it lands. (Circular range) (Successful Cooldown: 1.2s, Missed Cooldown: 1.5s) (Speed during Swipe: 16m/s, Maximum Swipe distance: 16m).

Addons:

+Brown/Common

  • Rabbit’s Foot- Slightly increase movement speed while Prowl is active. (+2.5%) (A rabbit’s left foot, cut cleanly from the ankle. Said to increase luck, but not for the rabbit.)
  • Dull Axe- Decrease the distance that can be traveled with Swipe. Gain twice as many Bloodpoints for landing a successful Swipe attack. (An old axe with a smooth edge, worn from years of use.)
  • Stone Knife- Slightly increase the length of time a Scent lies in the environment. (+2s) (A trusty hand-carved knife, made when Kitchi was young enough to make his own weapons.)
  • Butterfly Totem- The target location of a Swipe is shown to the Wendigo.  (A clay totem carved with a butterfly symbol. Represents transformation and metamorphosis.)

+Yellow/Uncommon

  • Owl Feathers- Moderately increase movement speed while Prowl is active. (+5%) (Feathers collected from owls in flight. Said to bestow wisdom among careful hunters.)
  • Jagged Arrowhead- Moderately increase the length of time a Scent lies in the environment. (+4s) (An arrowhead with points and barbs, hurts just as much coming out as it did burrowing in.)
  • Broken Bow- Slightly decrease the charge time of Swipe. (-0.2s) (A shattered bow from one of Kitchi’s friends, broken with his claws before delivering the killing blow.)
  • War Paint- Slightly increase the range in which Survivors can be detected with Killer Instinct. (+4m) (Red and white war paint made from local flowers and tree resin. A necessary step in preparing for battle to scare enemies and embolden allies.)
  • Poison Ivy Leaves- Survivors who are hit by a Swipe suffer from the Blindness status effect for 60s. (A clump of poison ivy leaves. Kitchi found that rubbing his arrowheads onto them caused irritation and pain in his targets.)

+Green/Rare

  • Bobcat’s Fur- Considerably increases movement speed while Prowl is active. (+7%) (The pelt of a large bobcat Kitchi took on his 16th birthday. Kept him warm throughout all but his final winter.)
  • Buffalo Horn- Moderately decreases the charge time of Swipe. (-0.4s) (A hollowed-out Buffalo horn on a leather strap. Used for sounding alarms and war cries when running into battle.)
  • Hogweed Stems- Survivors who are hit by a Swipe suffer from the Mangled status effect until healed. (Stems from the hogweed plant. A better poison as they caused permanent burns and scars to any who touched them with bare skin.)
  • Iron Knife- The Auras of Survivors creating noise last for 3s after leaving the Objective. (A clean iron knife taken from the first soldier Kitchi killed in battle. Though it was made by enemy hands, it was sharper than any other he had before.)
  • Raven Totem- Slightly increases the range of a Swipe. (+0.3m) Does not stack. (A wood totem with a carving of a raven. Represents cunning and trickery.)

+Purple/Very Rare

  • Winchester Rifle- Moderately increase the range that Killer Instinct can be activated. (+8m) (A bent and dented rifle taken from the enemy. When it ran out of ammo it served as a good club.)
  • Hemlock Blossoms- Survivors who are hit by a Swipe suffer from the Oblivious status effect for 60s. (Flowers from the Hemlock flowers. The poison made from these were used to tip arrows, turning even minor injuries into fatal wounds.)
  • Bone Dagger- The Auras of Survivors creating noise last for 5s after leaving the Objective. (A crude dagger sharpened from the femur of the Wendigo’s first victim. While effective, it was soon left behind when his claws grew out.)
  • Wolf Totem- Moderately increases the range of a Swipe. (+0.5m) Does not stack. (A stone totem carved with a wolf symbol. Represents strength and hunting.)

+Red/Ultra Rare

  • War Chief’s Headdress- Scents are no longer visible to the Wendigo. Killer Instinct and Aura detection range is now map-wide. (The headdress of the tribe’s war chief, passed down through the generations until Kitchi took it for himself the night he left the tribe.)
  • Colonel’s Jawbone- Tremendously increases the range of a Swipe (+1.5m) (Does not stack). Slightly decrease the amount of time needed to charge a Swipe. (-0.2s) Disables the Wendigo’s ability to see Survivor’s Auras when charging/charged Swipe. (The cracked jawbone of the leader of the white men. The fear in his eyes could be tasted in his flesh as he was torn apart.)

Killer Perks:

+Lvl 30: SURVIVALIST

Living off the land has taught you how to survive on the bare minimum, as well as how to best approach your prey.

"Silence- move with caution. When you attack, do so without hesitation." -Kitchi Megedagik

  • When you hit a Survivor, gain a Token, up to 5 Tokens.
  • Each Token decreases your Terror Radius by 5/7.5/10%. After hooking a Survivor, lose 2 Tokens.

+Lvl 35: MIMICRY

You were once human and know how humans should sound, so luring them into your grasp is as easy as playing pretend.

  • When a healthy Survivor enters your Terror Radius, they hear injured and moaning Survivor sounds coming from your location instead. This perk goes on cooldown for 90/75/60s after injuring a Survivor.

+Lvl 40: SCOURGE HOOK: SELF-MUTILATION

Anyone who dares take your trophies will pay for their greed.

"...arriving at the campsite we had discovered it had been ransacked, with our fellow traveler's remains strewn around the ground, Chunks of flesh were missing from their arms, head and torsos- God help us all." -Canadian settler's journal, 1885

  • At the start of the Trial, 4 Hooks are selected to be Scourge Hooks. Their Auras are shown in white.
  • When a Survivor rescues another Survivor from a Scourge Hook, they become injured. If they are already injured, they suffer from a Deep Wound. After rescuing the Survivor, their Aura is revealed for 6s.

Survivor: Odina Waubun

Background/Lore:

Odina was born on in the Fort McKay reservation, where she grew up in a close-knit community. She learned how to hunt and trap alongside her brothers and sisters, always being the most eager to learn. From a young age she learned the importance of family and loyalty. As a teenager, she stood her ground against a pack of wolves that had surprised them in the woods while her siblings escaped. After scaring them off with a few shots from her rifle, she returned home a local hero. Her family gave her the nickname of Maskwa- Bear in her native language, for courage.

After graduation from the local high school, the country was getting engaged in armed conflict overseas, and when they called for aid Odina was the first to answer. Basic training and overseas tours were rough, but she had pride in serving her country and bringing honor to her people. After signing on for special forces, she met her new commander- a stubborn, old-fashioned colonel whose sole purpose was to train the elite of the Canadian Special Forces… and to prove she didn’t belong there. He pushed her everyday to quit, making her run faster, jump higher and fight harder than any other soldier under his command. A grueling three years passed before she was accepted and began to serve as one of the best of Canada’s soldiers.

To celebrate, she and her squad mates went out to drink- that’s where she met Emily. There was so much that was perfect but taboo about Emily- a vibrant soul, frivolous painter and free spirit… yet she was white. And a woman. Her family and tribe would never approve, but there was just something about her that Odina couldn’t resist. They dated in secret for the better part of two years, sending letters to each other near the end when Odina was on deployment. It was difficult, but Odina decided to accept that both her culture and love life were equally important to her, and no one was going to get between them on her watch.

It was on a dangerous mission when she was taken. No one could explain it- one second the squad was ready to breach a terrorist’s abode, the next an explosion occurred and no one could locate Major Waubun. Emily cried her heart out hearing the news, but always held out hope- she’s MIA, not dead. They never could find her, except for a torn picture of Emily frozen in a set of animal tracks found nearby, tracks that could not be identified…

Survivor Overview:

Odina Waubun is a loyal adventurer who has led her life both carrying her culture with her and breaking away from old traditions. +Lvl 35: FIGHT TILL THE END

  • These effects do not stack with other perks.

Realm: Ormond, Alberta

+Map: Wolf Paw Camp

Once the home of the Wendigo, the people suffered long winters, vicious animal attacks and assaults by colonizers. They were barely holding onto their land when the creature came and slaughtered them all in one night. Arrows and hatchets flew through the air, but nothing stopped the beast as it tore through men, women and children alike. When the sun rose, the earth was drowned in the blood of its people. Here in the Entity’s realm, the fight still goes on- homes burning, bodies everywhere, horses screaming and running away, and a monster looking for fresh meat…

+Map Offering: Eagle Mask (A mask shaped to look like an eagle, decorated with its feathers. Symbolizes the divine spirit, leadership and healing. It’s been stained with blood and dirt over time.)

Charms:

  • Elk Skull (Both) (A cleaned elk skull, a trophy for the careful and patient hunter.)
  • Dog Tags (Survivor) (Dog tags that identified Major Odina Waubun as she toured throughout the Middle East. Thankfully she put silencers on them so it doesn’t give away your position.)
  • Bone Necklace (Killer) (A necklace made from the bones of every animal Kitchi every hunted. Among them are squirrel, bird, rabbit, elk, bear and human remains.)

Cosmetics:

+Survivor

  • Prestige
    • Odina (Her resilience and determination led her through the horrors of war and gave her the courage to move forward into the fight.)

    • Bloody Cargo Pants (Baggy clothes with torn pockets, so the tools that are necessary for survival are limited.)
  • Major Waubun
    • Officer’s Beret (A high ranking officer shows her authority with a clever method to keep her hair long enough for traditional braids.)
    • CADPAT Body Armor (Special Forces gear to keep suited up and protected against all manner of threats, but not tested against the supernatural.)

    • The Wendigo (As its sight dwindled its other senses became heightened and teeth lengthened, an insatiable hunger and unquenchable thirst took hold of it.)
    • Blood Drenched Corpse (There is barely any patch of fur or skin left untouched by the blood and gore of its previous victims upon its body.)

    • Wolf’s Body (The spirits of animals took hold of it as the strength and fur of wolves covered its body, giving it more means of destruction.)
    • Falcon’s Claws (The spirits of animals took hold of it as the sharp talons of hawks and falcons replaced its fingers, allowing it to tear through flesh easily.)

Animations:

+Environment

  • Boon Totem Animation: The totem lights up like a Hex, but burns light blue instead of orange.
  • Scent Animation: A faint glittering wisp trails through the air. The more recent the Scent was generated, the more opaque it is. The less recent the Scent was generated, the more clear it is.
  • Scent On Objective Animation: The Objective is ensconced in the Scent, not fully covering it up but wrapping it in a tight bind.

+Killer

  • Idle Animation: The Wendigo looks around snarling, sticking its head up high to smell the air. Occasionally stands up to its full height (~15ft) before hunching back down on all fours.
  • Walking/Running Animation: The Wendigo crawls on all fours shaking its head left and right as it samples the Scents. In close range to a Survivor, its looks right at them and drools excessively.
  • Stun Animation: The Wendigo shrieks and curls up, holding its head before returning to the Idle position.
  • Vault Animation: Similar to the Demogorgon, the Wendigo crawls through the vault location one limb at a time flicking it tongue.
  • Basic Attack Animation: The Wendigo swipes down with its claws splayed open.
    • Basic Attack Cooldown Animation: The Wendigo claws at the ground and shrieks before returning to the Idle position.
  • Breaking Pallet Animation: The Wendigo bites the Pallet and crunches it between its teeth. To the Killer POV, the visual tilt is reduced to prevent loss of FOV.
  • Breaking Breakable Wall Animation: The Wendigo puts both its claws through the top of the Breakable wall and slashed downward destroying it.
  • Dismantle Boon Totem Animation: A Killer performs a few Basic Attack animations. The first three are met with a blue shield around the Totem, with the four breaking the Totem with blue sparks and clattering bones.
  • Prowl Idle Animation: The Wendigo is more hunched up and shuts its mouth, both flicking its tongue and tilting its head.
  • Prowl Walking/Running Animation: The Wendigo moves silently and stealthy through the environment, checking the air often with a flicking tongue.
  • Prowl Crawling On Wall Animation: The Wendigo puts its claws through the walls on all four of its feet as it hisses and growls, moving carefully and splayed out throughout the walls surface.
  • Prowl Crawling On Ceiling Animation: The Wendigo presses itself against the ceiling, claws through the ceiling as it tilts its head listening for any noises.
  • Swipe Animation: Tensing its muscles and moving into a pounce-like form, ready to jump forward.
    • Successful Swipe Animation: The Wendigo stands up to its full height and screams deafeningly before returning to its Idle Animation.
    • Missed Swipe Animation: The Wendigo pounds at the ground shrieking before returning to its Idle Animation.

Trailers, Terror Radius Music, and More:

I wanted to go for something like traditional pow-wow chants mixed with darker themes and drums. Closest I could find is a short segment of this song: 0:17-1:27

Yes! This is what I wanna see in the game! ❤️

I just really hope they add cool roars i.e (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et6hjclFLcg&ab_channel=MonsterVersTV)

and survivors can hear it in the distance. And y'know what would be awesome? A thick foggy forest to be the map layout with it. Where its antlers blend with the trees, and there's things like dead animals across the map.

    Very well-done suggestion!

EDIT: Updated Odina's Boon perk to be inline with 5.3.0 PTB Boon mechanics.
