Do survivor need the headstart?
In the beginning of the match there is nothing else to do then gens. So one gets chased while 3 survivor do gens. Then after the first down, one is hooked, another is rescuing and healing and a third one gets chased. And with that the gen progress slows down, if the killer can keep up with the hooking.
I personally see it only as an average start when two gens get done before the first hook. 1 gen or less is a good start for the killer and three gens or more is a good start for the survivor.
How many gens should be done before the first hook in your opinion? What is realistic, what would be fair?

I think 1 gen by the first hook means both sides have similar chances. 1 or 2 hooks before the first gen massively favors the killer, and 2~3 gens by the first hook massively favors survivors.

You described it perfectly.

I'm more than comfortable if we've got a gen done before the first hook. If we've got two gens done before the first hook, I'm hunting for totems because we've got a very good start but NOED could take that away later
