It makes him sound like he was abandoned, he wasn't left behind, he sacrificed himself for this mates in L4D

then what would you call it? left for dead? that would still imply the same thing.

You could argue that his friends were unable to bring his corpse with him, or that he volunteered to be left behind, so that the others may escape.
I see what you mean about what the phrase "left behind" implies, but it's not always a negative implication.

Maybe that's how some people viewed it. While the rest of his previous team can move on he can't & is left behind in the Entity's realm.
