VHS The Game - Potential DbD 'competitor'?

So i recently read about this game in developement which is pretty much another 'DbD'-like game (an asymmetrical horror game)

Its not even in Beta as far as i know but here is a video where the devs play one match:

now it seems pretty close to DbD: you have 1 killer (monster from fictive 80s horror movies) vs. 4 survivors (in this case all teens), the gameplay seems also pretty close to DbD, especially for killers. The teens have a little bit of crafting and actual weapons though, and i dont really understand their objective (kill the monster?)

What do you think, does it have potential to live alongside DbD? Or will it meet the same fate as the others (Friday, Last Year, Hide and Seek, Home Sweet Home Survive [does this even exist anymore?], REsistance)

My opinion: While having some features of Last Year (which i disliked from the first glimpse) for me it seems it still has potential and could work out. The models and animations seem a little bit yanky but could of course see improvements. The teens seem to have specific roles/abilities which i like. Overall it seems like a clone but it at least has own ideas and a more unique look to it.

edit: Its also supposed to be Free2Play, but i dont know how they handle in-game purchases for cosmetics etc.

  • Looks interesting but too different from DBD to be a competitor.

The objective is to kill the killer (well, kill or be killed), you cannot escape, you have to kill it.

From what the devs explained, no perk in the game will be powerful enough to "carry" you, and they making it so you cant bully the killer.

    Perks will be minor buffs.

Is this that game where a survivor flies with an electronic umbrella and chases the killer? Cause no lol

It looks interesting, but I doubt it will go anywhere.

No matter what they do, competitors will never be able to change the fact that DbD has an established following and licensed characters. That hurdle has already proven to be too hard to climb over for basically every competitor that has come out.

I'm really interested in the game, but I'd avoid comparing it to DBD. Only because overhype can kill a project like this really quickly.

The game doesnt seem interesting at all IMO. The only objective is to kill or be killed. Theres no other objective it's just bully the killer until his baby rage meter fills just like F13.

If they add something else to do then maybe it could be fun

It is. I just wanna see where it goes without dying too soon. 😭 But judging by this thread, a lot of people aren't ready to try it out so maybe that's a good sign lol

Could have been but unfortunately, the art design is terrible, gameplay looks clunky.

I think that, yes, it could be a potential competitor but it's important to realise that DBD and VHS' similarities are a 4v1 game in the horror genre. That's it. Survivors have passives in VHS, not in DBD. The win conditions are vastly different too- survivors must fight back against the killer in VHS, there is literally no other way to win, while killers just need to incapacitate or kill all 4 survivors.

It's better to compare it to HSH:S or LY:TN than DBD because it is far closer to those games in terms of design.

It could be competition- and lord knows a lot of the playerbase have already invaded their Discord server- but I'd rather rate the game on it's own merits, and what it brings to the table, than just "POTENTIAL DBD COMPETITOR".

(But yes, I am very excited for it, and at least it's free to play).

To be fair, I have only ever judged HSHS and LY:TN as DbD-look-a-likes as well.

maybe ‚competitor‘ was the wrong word though but that’s how i saw those two (and I think DbD existing is big factor in why those 2 failed..)

this one will most likely be the first I will try first hands because it’s gonna be free to play.

Definitely. It's still pretty rough around the edges, but it has a great start.

I don't think DBD's existence was a big factor in their failure. HSH:S was attempting to move towards a F2P game model (by monetising everything, like they said they would when they left alpha) while not actually leaving alpha. It was still very janky when I last played, and the servers were far from amazing. Then they added in the pets- which made the game basically P2W- and it all came tumbling down.

LY:TN failed due to several (maybe several thousand) bad decisions on behalf of the dev team. Firstly, releasing as a Discord store exclusive screwed over a lot of people and made it very inaccessible, particularly when mandating voice chat be on using Discord's services. Then, they followed the DBD plan of attempting to monetise everything possible, except they failed at that one so moved over to rebranding with LY: After Dark. AD promised new content, and this new content was the not given. Finally, the studio gave up and the game was officially dead.

Bad decisions and excessive monetisation, imho, killed these games far more than DBD existing ever did.

It just looks like Last Year 2.0. But instead of fighting the killer while doing objectives that lead you to escaping, you just fight the killer and that's your whole objective. Content creators seem to be overhyping it on Twitter, even Home Sweet Home: Survive had a bigger chance of being a DbD competitor, if the devs weren't totally braindead and moneyhungry.

Artstyle just looks bad and the animations look clunky.

These DBD copies always seem to do the same thing. Overcomplicate things and make it possible to 'kill' the killer. They always seem unbalanced to me, and use massive maps that aren't designed around the gameplay. If they do take off, and people start to figure out the finer points of the system, it's going to end up wildly unbalanced.

I like the 80s twist though, it could use some tweaking and the animations are janky AF but at least it's style looks good.

Maybe with a better budget and some actual iconic 80s creatures it would be cool. It could potentially compete if it had: Chucky, Gremlins, Graboids, Firey's (Labyrinth) and other goofy 80s creatures.

I hope so. I feel like DBD has competition, thing is how many games are coming out with Michael Myers, Pinhead, Pig, Bubba, etc all wrapped into one game?

For me, this is literally why other games cannot compare to DBD. That being said, gameplay in DBD is very basic, and the overall performance isn’t great so if another game is capable of creating something fun and unique without needing icons in their game, then yes it might create competition for DBD. Until then good luck.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that Resident Evil asymm game as a failed competitor.

i disagree that only bigger company’s have a chance. The community is asking for similar games and if the implementation is actually good then it has potential. The thing is, all of these types of games have done pretty terrible decisions and those are even worse than what people say about BHVR‘s decisions..

Dbd really needs a competitor we all know this. It would probably be the best thing to happen to dbd (not saying VHS will be) from the players perspective.

but REsistance was tied to buy a whole other 59.99 game that a person who likes DBD may not want.

I sure as hell dont want to play RE3, but i would love to try REsistance at a far more reasonable price point.

Is it getting updates and new content and being actively supported by a development team?

I genuinely don't know lol I'm used to Capcom capping updates to their online RE games after a year.

Home sweet home had wayy more potential than this and it still died. So I don't think it will be any serious competition for dbd but we will see

If they want to compete with DBD they must to make it on his terrain making adult content not like this fornite style copy.

Having iconic figures is good but for me not really necessary to have a good game.

For me HSH:Survive lay everything to waste with his gachapon style and adding penalty for leaving lobbies when surv premades were seriously OP
