don't you climb the ranks too quickly?

hello community, I am a completely new DBD player and started about a week ago, however I have been following the game as a spectator on and off since release as I have always liked the idea. Just never had friends interested in the game, didn't get the idea that Killer would be played in SoloQ, I guess I'm stupid.

Anyways after I got the game as a gift a week ago I played about 19 hours of semi successful Survivor in a 2-4 SWF, was also good fun (I'm hardstuck Bronze IV but I also play like garbage :D) and a few days ago I started playing Killer.

Currently playing Legion exclusively because it seems simple enough to me to learn the killer basics, even if I have the feeling CoH counters his idea a little, but maybe I'm just too inexperienced. I played my way up from Ash 2 to Silver IV in a few hours yesterday, but I don't feel like I deserve such a climb with my total of 8 hours of killer experience? Last night I also had some games with 1-3 Red Ranks in a 4 player SWF, there I also got well destroyed but it was still fun, even if I find the jump from Ash - Gold Lobbies to Red Ranks a bit violent. Is there a way to practice casual DBD as a killer without playing directly Ranked or is it normal to fly through the lower ranks?

Oh and if it's allowed to ask more than one question, can anyone recommend me good sources for guides or similar? I'm having a lot of fun with Legion and I like the concept of DBD for SoloQ in general, Survivor is also a lot of fun but my crew is currently only playing Elden Ring so I'll stay alone in DBD for now :D.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the wall of text - have a nice evening and have fun ingame!

Just for reference, those Grades you see (e.g. Ash IV, Silver II, etc) aren’t used for matchmaking at all. They’re a remnant of an old matchmaking system the game used to use. The devs kept those Grades in the game though because they thought it would be a fun way to award people bonus bloodpoints once a month based on how high you can get your grade.

Matchmaking though uses a hidden rating. If you play killer it goes up when you kill a survivor and down when a survivor escapes, with the amount it goes up or down dependent on other factors including how much higher or lower your rating is to the opponent’s. As a brand new player it probably starts you at a below average rating, which is still even then a little high, and as survivors escape your rating will go down.

There’s a common misconception that the hidden rating is inaccurate and that’s what causes mismatches. That’s not probably not actually correct. The more common causes of mismatches are when the system doesn’t have someone immediately available close to the rating it wants so it throws in whoever is free at the moment. This happens for example when you have five people in a lobby and one leaves, in which case rather than make the remaining four wait even longer it grabs whoever is free. You also have people who group with friends that may be much higher or lower rated and the system might not handle well estimating a good killer rating to go against four survivors with wide ranging ratings of their own. So the hidden rating is probably a good estimate in that a game with 5 players who are all the same rating will probably be a good matchup, but certain factors make it so matches take place where there are large rating gaps.

As far as guides go, maybe check out Otz’s channel on Youtube. He has a ton of guides for beginners, including some pretty thorough ones. Also if you just want to look at numbers and details the DbD wiki is a great source of info. And of course you can ask questions on the forums and will probably get decent answers.

Thank you for this detailed answer!

I've heard of the MMR and the SBMM and since I've played other competitive multiplayer games I'm familiar with the basic principle, could have assumed that it will be harder after I've fetched one day almost exclusively 3Ks or 4Ks ^^.

I'm currently using the wiki to search for the individual teachables, good to know it's a good source, funnily enough I've also been actively watching Otzdarva for 2 weeks and have looked through some of his several hour long guides to find the right killer for me, so assume he's a good source too :D.

Have a nice day/evening (timezones :o) and thanks for not being deterred by the wall of text!

Not a problem I have, but I'm mediocre at best. If you're maining Legion and doing well, you're probably way better than me.

For guides, just hit Youtube. PotatoLegion is a good player that mains Legion, but it's best to watch a few guides on a killer just to learn different playstyles and perk combinations. There's a lot of strategy in playing killer, there's always something that never occurred to you.

But check the date on the guides. Old guides are worthless, perks change a lot, so has Legion.

I'm definitely no better than anyone on this forum :D I'm absolute garbage in DBD, whether as a killer or survivor - besides I don't main Legion, he's just the killer I've liked best so far, tested a few (Own all the killers currently in the game I think) and I'm trying to learn the basics, Legion seems to fit for that.

Have already noticed that it is not so easy with the guides, Legion also seems to have undergone some changes, thanks for the tip will PotatoLegion check out, maybe there are some helpful tips for beginners like me to improve as a killer :)

Thanks for the reply and good luck ingame!
