The altruism/teamwork problem for MMR
I know people have been talking about this off and on, but I started thinking about it again today because of a few matches I had.
The problem scenario is this: It's EGC and the killer has three players hooked/downed. Player Four could leave through the gates or try to save the others. Player Four decides to stay. They end up dying, but they save 2-3 of their teammates, who then escape.
From the MMR's POV, Player Four was easy to win against, and goes down in MMR.
From the killer's POV, Player Four ruined their 3K by turning it into a 2k or 1k, and might have even caused them to also go down in MMR.
It seems weird to me that, in this scenario, the killer would have done better if Player Four had survived, and yet surviving would also give Player Four higher MMR. That, essentially, you're raising the final score for the opposite team, but it also raises your score individually -- or the opposite, you're lowering the final score for the other team but also lowering your own score individually.
Like, I guess the MMR is based on the idea that everyone just tries their hardest in a vacuum and makes the optimal choices for themselves rather than the group, but I find it really hard to get myself in a frame of mind where I see "One player escapes and it happens to be me" as a better outcome than "Three players escape."
I don't know. What do other people think?
