Why do people defend mmr?

I don’t understand this phenomenon, it’s almost unanimously hated by 90% of the community yet some many still defend it.

It depends on what you mean by defending it. If it's about the way the number is calculated, that part is incredibly standard and normal, and there's no reason to assume it's not working/inappropriate for the game.

If it's about the actual state of people's matching, there are people who've had a better time with MMR than the grade system, so they could just be arguing from that perspective. I'm one of them, my games have been way more consistent since MMR's introduction, but I respect others have different experiences there.

A third, completely separate layer is when people have to be reminded that "sweaty games", "meta builds", and "tryhards" aren't matchmaking problems, they're balance problems.

So, yeah, it kinda depends on the context of the defence.

They defend it when it is convenient for them.

I don't defend it but it improved my solo surv games somewhat. Killer on other hand is too rough sometimes.

Also just because majority thinks something doesn't mean minority needs to conform. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion as long we are not rude.

The people that defend it are few and they clearly enjoy having a challenge every single game, good for them, but majority of the community wants to have chill games, and this is why people quit and throw sh1t at mmr.

Because they'd rather blame something else for sweaty games where the other side brings the strongest possible items, addons, offerings, and tactics.

EDIT: I know those things aren't because of MMR, however because of MMR those kinds of matches happen more and more often and some people take their frustrations out on things that aren't the problem (Killer mains, Survivor mains, X perk, X game mechanic, etc.)

Well, DBD always had a matchmaking system. We had the emblem system, the "victory cube" for killers and ranks based on earned BPs.

The only difference now is that we are basically back to the victory cube, just for both sides and your mmr rating is invisible instead of being shown as your rank. Needless to say, the majority of the players back then did not like the victory cube (killer's rank being based only on kills) to say it nicely ;)

Maybe some don't have a problem with MMR the same problems as you do.

Before MMR all the streamers thought sweat squads were just at the tournament level and didn't reflect real gameplay.

After MMR they sure changed their tune, didn't they?

Because people keep claiming that MMR ruined the game, when the reality is that the pain they're experiencing is coming from the game itself, not this system. MMR didn't make killer or solo a sweatfest. It just showed us the problems that were already there.

People who like MMR think that best killers should be the ones that face the best SWFs and the newer and less skilled players should be matched together. That seems reasonable.

It's the game balance, stale meta and the lobby backfilling causing the problems not the MMR itself. The MMR needs to completely ringfence the top players from the worst players so they never play eachother but loosen normal matchmaking so veteran players can have a break from sweaty matches.

Yeah, SWF has been busted this entire game's lifespan and people defended how gamebreaking it was with "you only play against them 1% of the time!!" Now high MMR killers fight nothing but sweaty SWFs because solo queue gamers can't push high MMR consistently

They gas lit their audiences with "It's only tournament level brah, you're just bad"

Then they claimed MMR didn't work

Then they started complaining and quitting

I‘m a MMR defender as I only play solo q. If it gets deleted from the game, I’ll only play SWF from that day

Apparently for some people it improved the quality of their games and rainbow lobbies can now just be dismissed by chanting gRaDeS dOnT mEaN aNyThINg. People also touted that it gave better matches for new players but that theory has been thoroughly busted since.
