Here is why dbd will eventually die
Dbd has been around for years, but no major competitor has managed to take it's spot. Yet. Dbd has a huge flaw that is fixable, but the dbd team is not willing to work on it.
It is the fact that there is a lack of variety of game modes in dbd. You can only play 4 survivors vs 1 killer, same goal, the only difference being the killer power and the map. There are no arcade mode or story mode (would be similar to a coop mission).
Now, imagine if a competitor managed to make a game with all of the modes: a competitive online mode like dbd has, arcade modes and a story mode. They would have a huge advantage. Most of the casual players (most players are casual, it is a minority that is competitive) would prefer this game instead of dbd.

Here is why everything will eventually die -> such is life.

DBD is more than the small indie game it used to be
It's cemented itself as the 'Smash Bros.'/Museum' of Horror icons. It's a franchise.
Even if DBD the video game were to 'die' (NGL I don't see it happening without an event of cataclysmic proportion), the franchise it has created will live on. It's also one of the most streamed games on Twitch (iirc?).
Look at Konami, they barely make video games anymore yet they've been able to milk their most popular franchises to death via things like pachinko machines and the like. I'm not saying BHVR would take that route but they just as easily could.
Hell there's DBD Cafes in Japan. I think people underestimate the sheer outreach of DBD.

The reason you had to say "now imagine" is because you know ain't no game going to do DBD as well as DBD while offering new game modes. I do agree that a GG EZ way of DBD to find some more success lies in new modes or expanding the lore in consumable ways.

because all games eventually stop being played or devolve into a small diehard fanbase.

All games die. Ten years from now, we're all going going to be hopping on this forum going "remember the good ol' days? Wish the servers didn't get shut down even though everyone switched to DbD 2."
