A more positive post, but the reveal of David has made me feel so much more seen and welcome in the DBD space as a whole, and I wanted to share that positivity!

Seeing a character revealed as gay is often a very hit or miss ordeal. I remember distinctly the backlash Blizzard received after revealing Soldier: 76 was a gay man, mostly due in part because of its sudden drop and lack of history within the lore. BHVR has been referencing their journey with revealing their first gay character for quite some time now, and I can especially respect that they consulted those with upfront experiences, rather than just dropping a label and running off. Regardless as to whether or not David was the best choice (And I do believe, due to him being a free character and one that focuses a lot of masculinity, he was), it's a huge step forward in the gaming world as a whole, especially because of DBD's genre and audience.

Many LGBTQAI+ people find comfort in this game, myself included. As a lesbian myself, it's often very alienating to join communities and find that the people within want you to burn for existing. The gaming environment is not often accepting of those who don't follow the status quo, regardless of what game it is; I've experienced it many times, both in the DBD sphere and out. Either they think your existence is criminal, or they fetishize it because its "unique" or some other gross term. And I especially appreciate that it IS David, because David shows that gay men can still be powerful, enduring and masculine, and that homosexuality does not detract from ones strength and willpower.

I think they have a very interesting angle with David; I can already see how he may pursue combat and conflict to help himself feel better about his masculinity, and validate himself and his strength; ones sexuality is often a core reason for self-hatred and doubt, and a person may explore many avenues to help themselves feel more solidified in their identity.

While DBD has always had a very open community, it still a huge step forward for a horror game to openly introduce this to us, especially in a time where we often are exposed to representation only when it can be monetized. That's a huge reason as to why I'm glad they DIDN'T do this during pride month.

So thank you, BHVR, for introducing the first in what I hope to be many queer characters that we can find ourselves in! <3
