Why can you not change killers mid lobby?
Isnt really fun being forced to play casual when you know they a toxic 4 man SWF

Because killers have individual mmr...

Because your MMR on one killer is unique to that killer, it'd mess up the matchmaking (...even more) to have killers swap between characters they have wildly different MMR on once they've already found a lobby.

What was the reason before MMR? I think I saw someone post the answer here a long time ago but I forget…

Because different killers have different MMR ratings and it doesn't want you to pick a killer with low MMR and then switch to one you perform better with.
Theoretically.
Because with that said, the maximum allowed variance in your killer MMRs is so small that they may as well trash this feature and let you switch again. I straight up do not notice any difference between my lobbies when I'm playing Nurse (who I'm totally helpless at and usually give 4Es) and when I'm playing Plague (who I usually win with.) And being locked is obnoxious at times. I'd prefer to adjust to killers I'm more/less comfortable with if the lobby seems threatening/looks like newbies, I'd like to do things like switch to Pyramid Head if someone's name is 'mori me triangle daddy', and if I'm Hag or Wraith and I get a 4-flashlight lobby - I would play if I could just switch to someone else, but I can't, so that's a dodge for me.

Before MMR it was possible to swap killers in the lobby. They locked it while doing their background data stuff, so it has been this way for quite a while now.
The fact that surv can still last second swap around is beyond me.

They shut it off in preparation for the MMR system, I believe - either they were gathering data with individual killers or they just didn't want to re-enable a feature that they were eventually going to remove anyway. It was like that for about a year before MMR was implemented.

If you're talking about last second item swapping with survs, I'm with you. But the survs themselves are essentially identical (functionally), so there isn't the same issue there as with killers.

Because BHVR thinks their MMR system works.

Because we act as if each killer had their own mmr even though we know the truth
