Was SBMM a mistake?
I will admit that I'm a bit biased here. I personally think that Dbd is meant to be a casual game, and that it should have stayed that way and that the addition of MMR kind of destroys anyone trying to play less competitively. You could argue that you could afk or purposely derank in some other way, but someone shouldn't need to be forced to waste their time in such a way in order to enjoy playing. I'm sure a lot of people out there will agree with me. I don't like going against the same killers, builds, items, strategies, perks, addons, etc. over and over again, and I don't like that I'm just left in the dust if I do not do the same.
On the other hand, I see why a lot of people support the MMR system. Matchmaking is more consistent than rank based matchmaking (which isn't saying much) and matches generally feel more competetive, and i understand why many people like the tension or adrenaline that comes with that.

I don’t see how MMR made it more competitive than rank based matchmaking? The only difference is how the rank is calculated and that there is no setting back each month, but the idea of MMR is actually to match those that are on the same skill level with each other instead of making super unfair matches that are already decided before they start.
rankbased matchmaking didn’t work and a new/different system was needed.
SBMM does need many improvements, some were already confirmed to come, others (like an indication how well the system worked for a match without giving definitive numbers) hopefully will still come.. also it shouldn’t be based solely on kills/escapes..

I find that the people who think MMR made the game worse, or just in general have disagreements with the system existing at all, invariably end up showing a fundamental misunderstanding either of what it currently does, or what it's meant to do.
I also don't quite understand the idea that this system is somehow more competitive than the old one. It asks less of you, and sorts into general, invisible brackets, instead of showing you both your own ranks and the amount by which you're climbing each match. Assuming that ranks functioned, which they didn't, they'd be an immensely more competitive matchmaker system, since there's... ranks, like, there's a ladder to climb.
It was obviously a good idea and, after I've looked into it a little, I feel confident saying that its basic concepts (IE, being win based) are also pretty obviously fine. It's made the game slightly better, and improvements to it will continue making the game better. Most of the bad experiences people have had with it are more of a balance thing, though, so improvements to the matchmaker probably won't be that obvious from the outside until the meta is in a healthier spot.

Honestly at first i hated it. But now my survivor and killer games are a lot more fair.
That being said i still think it could use ALOT of improvements

I think that was my fault for not using the correct word/just not really explaining myself correctly. My point was that because of how MMR is designed it’s going to become naturally more and more competitive as you get more wins. Facing opponents who bring better and better stuff and are better players is inevitable, as it should be. SBMM is more competitive because it actually tries to be a decent matchmaking system. The problem is that matching opponents based on skill doesn’t work for Dbd in particular right now both because of how many things in the game can give you an advantage without actually having to outplay your opponent, and because of how the game itself defines “skill”.

I agree that the main thing responsible for bad player experience is balancing, though even with that in mind, MMR has (at least in my experience) caused those balancing issues to be more prominent in my games and cause them to be much less enjoyable overall.
and when I said MMR was more competitive, I was trying to refer more towards what’s happening within the matches rather than the feedback the system gives to the player. I apologize if I caused a misunderstanding there.

That means it's working, and was obviously a good idea.
Any time you didn't see those balancing problems in the previous system, it's because you were very badly mismatched against newer or lesser skilled players- excepting for the occasional meme squad or fun player like you'd still see now. MMR didn't magically make people play sweaty; people who have played the game for a little while are gonna feel like harder opponents.
As for what's happening within the matches, see above. It being more frequent is, paradoxically, a good thing. Especially now that we know the meta shakeup is coming soon(ish).

Even if on paper it is a better system, in the current state of Dbd and the meta, and in the current state of SBMM, the game is (in my humble opinion) less enjoyable than before MMR was introduced. This does not mean that it cannot improve, which is something that I failed to consider, and I’m convinced that MMR feel a lot better once the meta improves. (in hindsight I regret what I chose as the title of this thread)
If you’re saying balance issues being more noticeable is good because they’re more likely to be fixed this way, that is true but it’s certainly not pleasant for the player to have to deal with these kinds of things on a match to match basis.
Side note- MMR didn’t turn people into sweaty players but they certainly become more and more common to see the more you win against less experienced players.

In my opinion, the game was in fact more fun to pick up and play before the changes, especially on killer side, where you aren't forced to run a meta(slave)-killer to compete with toxic SWF teams who run the best meta perks at all times. God forbid if you just want to play a fun match with your good old favorites. That is my experience with SBMM.
I actually preferred visible ranks that reflected upon a player's actual skill instead of the hidden ones we have today. I think it opens for much more unbalanced matchups, being that you have zero knowledge on what kinds of players you are facing against.
