I wouldn't mind if Gift of Pain was 25% slowdown.

Seriously, though. Gift of Pain is the healthiest slowdown perk, and the one with the most counterplay. It's sad that it shipped with such low numbers that it's unusable and 16% still doesn't feel like enough.

What Gift of Pain does: when you hook a survivor on a scourge hook, they get Sloppy Butchered. The next time they're healed to healthy, they receive a mild action speed slowdown until you hit them again.

To reiterate: here's a possible sequence of events:

start the game - do gens for a minute - killer finds you - killer injures and downs you - killer hooks you - you get unhooked while the killer is away - you get healed -> you do gens for a while <- you get found and chased again - you get hooked, then unhooked, maybe healed, at this point the game should be mostly over either because you're all death hook or there's 1 gen left. Hopefully you don't die.

See that bold text? now imagine you're 16% slower during that part only.

On the whole, Gift of Pain is a weaker Thanatophobia that has no effect until you hook survivors, and has no effect if you tunnel. It's only draw is that it also couples in a situational Sloppy Butcher.

What's the counterplay? It's hard to avoid the sloppy butcher effect, but there are several ways to avoid the slowdown:

  • Don't get caught and hooked (so Gift of Pain is only good if the killer plays well)
  • Don't heal after being unhooked (though it makes it easier for the killer to tunnel you, gens will go extra fast when survivors don't take the time to heal and don't get affected by GoP's slowdown)
  • Take a protection hit for someone after being healed. Unless the killer continues to chase you after this, you can heal up and not have to worry about GoP again.
  • Play with teammates that sabo, since Saboteur can now effectively counter scourge hooks in the absence of Monstrous Shrine or Starstruck

Seriously, I would much rather killers use Gift of Pain than bring regular gen regression or play Legion with Thana, which is why it's sad that Thana (and don't forget 30% Pentimento) will almost always be stronger than GoP.
