Nurse Nerf Idea - Candles

When we change something, we have to ask why we have to change it in the first place. For Nurse, the answer is rather simple. She is very good at making survivors feel like nothing they do matters. So if we want to nerf her, we need to give survivors some sort of counter play while also not just making her useless.

My solution is a new item: the Candle.

The Candle functions simialrly to the VHS tape in the sense that you can have another item while carrying a candle. Candles spawn in the map on top of a shrine and can be picked up, with a total of 5 candles each with a unqiue symbol to identify them.

When carrying a candle, the following effects occur:

  1. The Nurse's Blinking Location is revealed to you
  2. When the Nurse blinks, the nurse has to wait a fraction of a second in order to swing at you. This effect does not stack.

These two effects are powerful and let survivors stand a chance against the power of the nurse. However, these are still candles. They burn out.

Each Candle has, by default, 30 charges.

When the Nurse is not within a 32 meter radius, the candle burns at the rate of 0.25 c/s. When the nurse in within a 32 meter radius, it burns at 1 c/s. When the Nurse blinks towards a location within 24 meters of you, the candle loses 2 charges instantly.

Each Candle can be put back onto a shrine to have it recharge. However, it takes 2 minutes for it to recharge at a rate of 0.25 c/s, but for every injured, hooked, or dead survivor, the candles recharge 0.15 c/s faster.

One small problem for survivors however. They can't see how many charges are left on a candle. The Candle is powerful, strong enough to stop the nurse from getting a quick down. But you don't know how much safety you actually have.

To make matters worse, the Nurse can also snuff a candle that is recharging, removing 25 charges from the candle, but can only do this to a candle once while it is on the shrine.

A small mercy for survivors is that the candle instantly gains 20 charges after getting unhooked, letting them escape from a tunneling Nurse.

These changes were designed around the idea of giving survivors counter play without taking away Nurse's power. It also adds a level of tension and fear to match as survivors have to guess how many charges each candle has. The candles are also not an instant win button, as while knowing where the Nurse is going can actually harm more than it helps, as the Nurse could faint going in one direction only to switch at the very last second, catching the survivor off guard.

I think this change adds more to both sides and makes playing as the Nurse and against her more interesting.

I'm so sorry, but reading this all I thought of was phasmophobia now I wanna play phasmophobia lol.

It sounds neat and doesn't make Nurse super bad, but I don't really like the built-in wallhacks with candles as seeing where Nurse is gonna blink depending on whether it's an aura through walls or not is a bit strong even for a little bit. It's essentially going to make people who use LoS effectively impossible to read if they know your moves ahead of time which is a bit much. The only case where this will be not a problem at all is if it was an open area, which I only really see happening a bit on dead dawg and shelter woods, but there are too many maps where this will be too good on.

Also, I also want to note flicking the blinks as Nurse is extremely hard to do on console I still haven't mastered it and I play a lotttt of Nurse, it's pretty much only a thing PC players can do since their sensitivity can be through the roof. Like it's easier for me to flick a hatchet as huntress than flick a blink like I can't do a full 360 spin around onto a survivor kinda deal. Most I can do is a look a bit right of their direction quickly turn left and blink on them or while blinking mid-blink turn around facing them and appear behind them and wack them. I do not like the idea of making something that is difficult for console players and making it essential as counterplay or else I am going to get sad because I already hate how strange trickster plays on console lol.
