Remembering Some Old Killer Powers Before Being Buffed or Nerfed
I've been thinking about the killers powers in this game and how much of them have changed either getting buffed or nerfed and sometimes being more fun to vs or play as to have unique playstyles in order to do well with.
Hillbilly didn't have the overheat and there was more players playing Hillbilly back then and while still being a fun killer to play as and against that overheat mechanic has made Hillbilly less common nowadays sadly.
Nurse didn't have any cooldowns on her blinks and could give herself 5 blinks if she wanted and omega blinks too. Though many people are saying Nurse needs a nerf still to this day just remember she had all this in the past and granted omega blink is still kinda here but, that needs a longer charge time then before if you want full blink distance.
Freddy only being able to pull people into the dream world and seeing there aura's all game from a certain distance from the Survivors was interesting and it felt like you were playing as Freddy and he was very unique but, also made him the worst killer for a while before his rework.
Spirit while I know many Survivor mains will disagree with me on this but, I personally think the old Spirit was more fun to play as and against there was different variety's of addons that they used rather than now which is mainly Mother's Daughter's Ring and that one purple addon that I can't remember the name of. Spirit didn't have directional phase which made for a unique challenge to learning how to beat her and Survivors had to be caution if they were in her terror radius and she was phasing cause since there would be no sound but, instead it all went down to Spirit has "0" counter play

Old, you say...
Now THAT is my domain. Always was, always will be.
Ask away, friends! And allow me to offer a different perspective.

Seeing Freddy and Billy one of the least played killers is just depressing.

Plague.
Patch 2.6.0
- Quality of Life: once all Pools of Devotion are corrupted, they reset and automatically grant The Plague Corrupt Purge.
Patch 3.6.0
- Buff: The Plague now starts with one corrupted Pool of Devotion.
———
Prior to these changes, survivors and killer had more ‘choice’ and diversity in the games with Plague. Originally survivors will hold the choice to cleanse or not, possibly choosing to remain broken and never letting her gain corruption vile.
Later, once any cleansing happens, Plague has the choice of using her Corruption or trying to get every Pool of Devotion corrupted so survivors could no longer cleanse themselves and are forced to remain broken the rest of the match.
The game was a constant change in playstyles and strategies based off of what the other side was doing.
Killer could choose to prioritize her sickness over her corruption and base builds and ideas around her weaker primary power instead of her stronger secondary. Both sides would usually change up their strategy at end game. Like Survivor might choose to refuse to cleanse until all gens are popped so they can instantly heal and try to make end-game saves…or Killer might purposely keep everyone sick until they are at one gen and realize their only chance at a win is to pull a long shot victory and devour one pool of devotion to try and snowball a bunch of one-shot slugs for the V.
———
My point being that letting add-ons exist to force the survivors to deal with one/two pools of devotion was more then enough to appease the Plague players who were upset they could never use Corrupted Vile. That and letting survivors abuse the free heals AND THEN ALSO, resetting all Pools so they can do it again, just because Killer doesn’t want or can’t compete with the timed consumption was overkill.
Plague was a very fun experience before the Buff/Quality of Life changes that killed half of her kit. I don’t care about the watery hatchets, I want to spread my sickness and pressure you all to cleanse, just so I can do it again, and keep doing it till you have squandered your advantages and ended up in my forever broken hell.
RIP my Sickness Mama

Old Freddy...
He was best killer in game. He was not strongest but who cares. He was so fun.
New Freddy?
I am not playing him anymore.

A terrible situation, indeed.
The struggle carries on.

Deathslinger, he got his new artritis mechanic, gave him 4 good addons and also gutted his TR and called it a day.

Nice to see you posting! Hope you are doing well.

Hello, my dear friend!
It is good to see you :)

Doc used to have two stances, one for attacks and one for shocks. You had to manually switch between the two and there was a little delay to complete where you could just move.
In treatment stance, he'd move at 110 and it would slowly build up madness for survivors in TR (there was no static blast). Another peculiarity was that he could perform grabs from treatment stance, meaning that he could effectively make unhooks impossible. You would just need to quickly spam tap the shock button, that would initiate and cancel shocks. If a survivor even just faked unhooking for a millisecond, they would get instantly grabbed. That made him the second-best facecamper in the game, only surpassed by Bubba.

Ghostface at launch emitted a hazy noise so you could tell where he was lol go to 1:52 and you can see how loud it was

I don't get why everyone claims that the overheat mechanic is the reason for billy to not being picked anymore. The overheat was significant in PTB, but for Live it was decreased massively, to a point where you really did not have to mind it at all if not for playing curve billy. They increased that a bit later as it is now, but it's still the same. If you are not trying some sick curves, you won't be hindered by the overheat at all. LIkewise, the only situations were I witnessed a billy player going into heat cooldown was for the curving billies.
The "real" reason for billies plummeted pick rates is his addon pass, with the instasaw addons being removed completely without compensation (tuned carboratur has a massive downside). THAT hit the casual billy player hard, bc many used that addons to get easy downs ( I did that as well). So many many billy players moved to some other, "easier" killer after the addon rework, and only the hardcore curving billy players remained.

Not necessarily killer power related, but I miss Thrill of the Hunt. A crappy, gimmicky build I enjoyed was what I called "Totem Wars" Mikey which was just Tombstone shenanigans but with 4 hexes.
Some games the survivors seemed absolutely hell bent on playing Capture the Flag with me.
I started during the Twins era so I don't really remember many legacy powers. There was DC salt-mine Spirit and Forever Freddy aka Sweaty Freddy but thankfully he's 6 ft in the ground where that setup belongs. Shame for Elm St. fans, though. Boring killer with bugger all for cosmetics.
I do remember Pyramid Head being more smooth when I first bought him. I regret getting bored with him so fast, because he got even more boring after they gave him arthritis. Deathslinger has arthritis now too but that change didn't bother me as I was never confident in my quick shots to begin with.

Agreed. The overheat is hardly noticeable in normal gameplay. Only if the power is needlessly spammed. Another aspect to me though is that his movement and hit boxes became janky after the nerf. Not just for the chainsaw either, it’s weird.

While the abilities were more fun on certain killers back in the day(heavily disagreeing with spirit for multiple reasons tho, mother daughter ring was more common before the changes and more powerful too, twice as strong, no phasing sound, versing that every 2-3 matches, don't know why you think it's common now)
But one big factor you're forgetting too: corrupt intervention wasn't a thing for the longest time. Undying wasn't, Pop was, but Nurse was needed in that time period too. Ruin didn't regress gens at 200%.
With Ruin being buffed to a point where it actually was useful in higher tier games, Billy gained a massive buff. My biggest disappointment around the Billy changes are his add-ons, because I think overall the overheat mechanic is fine, it just needs some supporting add-ons.
Spirit truly had 0 counterplay. The only counterplay was predropping pallets, which is only valid if you're playing in a 4 man SWF on Comms and know what all other survivors are doing, and those survivors know where you've been dropping the pallets. Any other scenario, and no matter what you did, Spirit would benefit. And while I agree that in theory having no directional sound was fine-ish, having no sound at all was not. And Spirit had no sound while you were in her terror radius. I was actually thinking about a build that gave her a massive TR just to show how ridiculously powerful the lack of phasing sound is. If a killer can stand still and make a survivor slow vault a pallet in front of them, without any in-game indication of a difference, then that's basically 0 counterplay.
Freddy somewhat returned in the form of Onryo, except lacking aura reading. But the chase related mindgames(not being visible) are really fun to use again. After the update, Onryo is going to be somewhat viable again as she can walk through survivors with her ability and basically negate the bodyblocking. So that's nice.
Nurse, still needs a nerf. As long as her Omega blink also speeds up her blinking speed, it's simply busted. I don't mind longer blinking distance, but if the longer blinking distance means she can blink 20 meters 1.5x faster at basically the same charge speed, then what is the negative aspect of the add-on to balance that out? There is none.
If we're truly talking about mechanics from Ye Olde Days that I miss: visibility. Sure, trees were thick as hell, and currently it's easier to see someone working on a generator in the distance, which is good. But on the other hand, survivors also see you approaching from 3x as far. Survivors also have a harder time hiding in grass and behind trees, but that also forces survivors to play more optimal and sit on gens more often.
I simply feel like there is too much visibility on most maps right now. Eyrie of Crows is an example where there is too little visibility, which is also not great, but the big benefit is that it's one of the few maps where survivors will run into you on accident.

Old Freddy was good but most people just refused to learn him properly. Obviously loops and toolboxes were much more busted back then which I think greatly increased the demand for a buff, but his map control was incredible and the potential for mindgames when survivors were falling asleep was nothing to scoff at. Plus his add-ons were incredible, I still remember how fun the class photo + red paint brush combo was.

OLD old Nurse makes me absolutely thankful for the Nurse we have now.
I never whine about her now, even though she's still powerful, I'd rather be clapped by her now than EVER seeing old Nurse again

As an old man-- old isn't always better. Nostalgia filters are very, very strong.
Poor Billy, though.

Billys addons were butchered and the overheat mechanics only adds to his downfall. But boy was he fun to play back in the day.
they should’ve chose either the addons or the overheat not both tbh.
and how could we forget Ghosty’s insta reveal at any distance at launch. Man, even mildly looking in the direction one of his flowy straps was enough to reveal Him.

Would be nice if they brought old Freddy back as an add-on.

Welcome to the fight.
