The Refraction

Anna Esseker

Story (this is largely based on the 2008 film, Mirrors; hope BEHAVIOUR gets the rights to this)

"A nun at the Saint Augustine's Monastery, Anna Esseker's childhood was far from virtuous. As a child, Anna was violent and uncontrollable, and was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia.

She was taken in by a doctor who believed that she had a rare personality disorder. His treatment was to confine Anna to a chair surrounded by mirrors, believing this would cure her disorder by forcing her to confront her own reflection.

When she returned home, she was assumed to be cured. However, strange things started to happen with the mirrors in their home. As a result, her family sent her to a convent, Saint Augustine's Monastery, where mirrors are forbidden.

Ben Carson, a suspended police detective, investigates deaths where the victims appear to die by suicide or a freak accident nearby a reflective surface.

His investigation leads him to Anna, whom he confronts in her past. Anna explains that she was actually possessed by a demon, which was drawn from her and became trapped in the mirrors.

She further explains that it collects the souls of those it kills and if she were to return, it would make it possible for the demon to be brought back into the mortal world.

As his son is being targeted by the demon, Ben threatens Anna and straps her into the chair in a psychomanteum.

The demon soon emerges and possesses Anna, who attacks Ben.

Ben fights back; and as a last resort, ignites an exposed gas line. The building starts to crumble and the ceiling falls upon both of them.

Anna, now possessed by the demon, and Ben, wake up at the monastery, but something is off."

Powers

Power: Mirror World

The Refraction’s beginning is the survivors’ end.

  • Start the Trial with 6 Tokens. Press the power button to use Diffract.
  • 7 static mirrors will spawn in the Trial (one for each generator but not necessarily near one). They start off covered and inactive but become uncovered and active after 30 seconds.
  • Survivors can cover the mirror but doing so reveals their aura to the killer.
  • Covering the mirror takes 3 seconds.
  • Covered mirrors become uncovered after 30 seconds.

Special Ability: Diffract

You cannot run and hide from your own reflection.

Pressing the power button enables The Refraction to equip a cursed mirror. Holding the power button places a cursed mirror at a chosen surface.

Vertical placement

  • Using Diffract on a vertical surface (pallets included) will spawn a small mirror which reveals survivors within line of sight, lingering for .5 seconds after leaving.
  • Line of sight is 3 meters by 7 meters; can be obstructed by obstacles.
  • Small mirrors take 1 second to place.
  • Small mirrors last 50 seconds.
  • Small mirrors can only be seen by survivors revealed by it. Survivors will see a subtle flash from the direction of the mirror.
  • Small mirrors placed on pallets will be destroyed once the pallet is pulled down.

Horizontal placement

  • Using Diffract on a horizontal surface will spawn a large mirror which reveals survivors that step on it; lingering for 1 second outside the mirror.
  • Large mirrors are 5x5 meters in size.
  • Large mirrors take 3 seconds to place.
  • Large mirrors last for 30 seconds.
  • Large mirrors are hidden but can be revealed once a survivor steps on it. Survivors will hear a mirror crack.
  • Large mirrors can be destroyed by survivors.
  • The time it takes to destroy large mirrors is 3 seconds. Only one survivor can destroy a mirror.
  • When a large mirror is destroyed, this causes shards to embed to the feet of the survivor who destroyed it; causing them to be hindered for 5 seconds.

Cursed mirror tokens replenish every 40 seconds.

There can only be 5 cursed mirrors placed at a time.

Flashlights can be aimed at mirrors (static and cursed) to disable them until the flashlight is aimed away.

Special Ability: Psychomanteum

The demon within Anna Esseker resurfaces and brings forth torment to the Trial.

Whenever a survivor is revealed by a mirror (either by covering static mirrors or being revealed by cursed mirrors) builds up Psychomanteum's meter.

Whenever a survivor destroys a cursed mirror, this further contributes to Psychomanteum's meter.

Covering static mirrors also contributes to Psychomanteum's meter.

Every active static mirror and every placed cursed mirror passively contributes to Psychomanteum's meter.

  • Activation threshold: 300 charges
  • Survivor reveal: 2 charges/second
  • Active static mirror: 0.1 charge/second/mirror
  • 7 active static mirrors: 0.7 charges/second
  • Placed cursed mirror: 0.15 charges/second/mirror
  • 5 Placed cursed mirrors: 0.75 charges/second
  • Mirror destruction: 10 charges/instance
  • Mirror covering: 5 charges/instance

Once the Psychomanteum meter is full, Psychomanteum begins automatically.

Effects:

The Refraction:

  • The time it takes to place cursed mirrors is reduced.
  • Teleportation to mirrors is now enabled. Press the ability button to teleport to a mirror.
  • Speed is based on the mirror type and distance of the mirror.
  • Large mirrors - fastest
  • Static mirrors - middle
  • Small mirrors - slowest

  • Charges of cursed mirrors replenish faster.
  • Increased movement speed. (Further increased when near mirrors.)

Mirrors:

  • Static mirrors now cause a reflection of The Refraction to appear in the mirror, causing survivors who pass by it (within 5 meters) to scream, causing an aura-flare-up.
  • Static mirrors cannot be covered.
  • Covered static mirrors are automatically uncovered.

Survivors:

  • The movement keys of survivors would be switched (e.g. pressing A will make you go right; pressing W will make you go backwards).
  • Skill checks would go in the opposite direction.
  • The screen of survivors would have mirror cracks.
  • Flashlights aimed at mirrors can now also blind survivors.

Psychomanteum lasts for 60 seconds.

Perks

Hex: Reflection

What you see isn't always what you get.

  • Causes additional Totems (1 / 2 / 4)  to spawn in the Trial.
  • Hex: Reflection will affect (1 / 2 / 4) Totems in the Trial.
  • Hex: Reflection totems will appear as Dull Totems and can be interacted as such.
  • Blessing Hex: Reflection Totems will cause the totem to be destroyed (as if they cleansed the totem).
  • Cleansing Hex: Reflection Totems will cause the totem to be revealed as a Hex Totem.
  • Hex: Reflection Totems that are revealed can be cleansed or blessed normally.
  • Hex: Reflection Totems that are not cleansed or blessed (either still camouflaged as a Dull Totem or revealed as a Hex Totem), affect and are affected by other totem-based perks (e.g. NOED, Hex: Undying, etc.)

Backscatter

What are you looking at?

  • Hitting a survivor causes the Killer's Red Stain to be reversed for 15 / 25 / 35 seconds, appearing behind the Killer, instead of in front of the Killer.
  • Downing a survivor during Backscatter would have their screams muffled and the Aura of the downed survivor would not be revealed.
  • The Aura-Flare-Up from hooking the downed survivor would appear as it normally would.

Juxtaposition

I see you, but can you see me? …The real me?

  • Whenever a survivor is unhooked at least 20 meters away from the Killer, an illusion of the Killer would spawn in a random spot within 15 meters of the unhooked survivor's and would start moving towards the hook for 4 / 7 / 10 seconds.
  • The illusion will not spawn within 10 meters of the unhooked survivor.
  • The illusion will not spawn within 5 meters of a survivor.
  • The illusion would have a bigger terror radius (20% / 15% / 10%) and a Red Stain.
  • The illusion will always spawn the farthest from the Killer.

END

Please feel free to give comments and suggestions on this idea. Hope the devs see this. Will try to work on the associated survivor and chapter as well :)
