Demogorgon Guide time!

I've been on the Forum for a bit now, but I've yet to make an in-depth guide for Demogorgon, so let's change that.

This guide will go over the basics of Demogorgon, how to play him, builds depending on the player's playstyle, Add-Ons and some more miscellaneous tips and tricks to help you during your Trials.

Basics

Let's start off with the simplest of things first: Demogorgon shouldn't be your first Killer.

I've told some people that their first Killer should be Demogorgon, but I wouldn't realistically advise that.

Demogorgon, unlike most other Killers, loops tiles "inefficiently". That means Demogorgon has to loop tiles the wrong way, and this will teach you a bad habit on the other Killers. I'll get back to this later on in the guide.

Now, let's get on to Demogorgon himself

The Demogorgon starts off with 6 Portals, which can be placed pretty much everywhere, but the surface has to be smooth. You can't place a Portal on stairs, for example. If you place a Portal, you won't be able to get it back, unless the Survivors seal them. Portals are a finite resource, unlike Hag traps.

Once you have placed a Portal, it will be "inactive". Inactive Portals make no noise and are invisible to Survivors. Unless the Survivors saw you placing the Portal, they won't know it exists.

To traverse from one Portal to another, you'll have to have at least 2 Portals placed, and stand on one of them. There will be a red arrow indicating which Portal you're about to traverse to.

Once a Portal has been traversed from or to, it will become "active". Active Portals can be seen, heard and sealed by Survivors.

While traversing, you're granted the Undetectable Status Effect and for 3 seconds after.

Why do you want to activate your Portals?

Because, whenever a Survivor steps on them, you'll be able to see them through walls over the entire Map with Killer Instinct, only if you are holding Of The Abyss.

Active Portals also inflict Survivors that step on them with the Oblivious Status Effect. The Oblivious Status Effect makes it so Survivors can't hear your Terror Radius.

I think that's all the non-numerical information I can spew about Portals, so let's get onto the basics of the Shred:

While holding Of The Abyss, you will be able to use your Shred. Shred is like a longer, faster and damaging Lunge.

Shred has a wider hit-box, meaning it will hit Survivors that are slightly to the left or right of you.

Colliding with a dropped Pallet or Breakable Wall will break it. Colliding with a Survivor will deal 1 Health State worth of damage.

You can't barely move your camera while shredding, you're going in a straight line.

Using Shred off of the high ground, like a hill for example, will basically allow you to fly for a few seconds. It's faster than just walking.

Advanced

Ok, now that we got the simplest out of the way, let's have a closer look at Demogorgon's Power, starting off with the Portals again.

Portals take 1 second to place and it takes 1.5 seconds to enter a Portal.

The teleport has a cooldown of 10 seconds.

Portals can't be placed within 2.5 Meters of Pallets, within 4 Meters of the Exit Gate Switches or a Hook, or within 8 Meters of another Portal.

Active Portals will show you the Survivor's location if they are within a 4 Meter radius (same goes for the Oblivious Status Effect affliction), but can be heard from up to 8 Meters.

Sealing a Portal takes 12 seconds. With 2 Survivors, it takes about 9, for 3 Survivors 8 seconds and for 4 Survivors it takes 6 seconds.

While a Portal is being sealed, its Aura will be shown to all other Survivors in white.

1 odd thing Portals do is show you the Survivors, even if they are under the Portal, but it won't affect them with the Oblivious Status Effect. I, however, have not tested how far down the location reveal goes, so it can either only show Survivors a few Meters under it, or from the top of the library down to the west office on RPD (the west office is on the first floor, while the top of the library is on the third floor).

Now, let's get onto the fun stuff, the Shred.

A fully charged Shred takes 1 second to charge, however, you can use your Shred as soon as you charge it for 0.65 seconds.

Shred's distance depends on how much it has been charged for. A fully charged Shred has a deceptively huge range, 11 Meters.

A "Short-Shred" has a range of about 7.15 Meters.

Both types of Shreds have the same speed, that being 18.4 m/s or 460%.

You can use your Shred up/down stairs. The only problem then, is that your hit-box becomes a little wonky and it reduces your chance of hitting the Survivor, especially when going down stairs.

Breaking a Pallet or Breakable Wall with Shred will take 2 seconds, and hitting a Survivor will take 3 seconds.

Missing will give you a cooldown of 2.25 seconds.

You're slowed down to 96.5% or 3.86 m/s, but only after you've already charged your Shred for 0.5 seconds

Another fun fact about Shred is that it's slightly "butter-y".

What do I mean by that? It can slide off of surfaces.

Cars are some of the most well-known objects Demogorgon can slide on, but not all of them allow for fun. Whenever bots are added, I will go through every Map and try to slide on of every single object I can find and see what's butter-y and what isn't.

All I know for sure is that trucks can't be slid on, benches on Ormond can be slid on, and a few snow piles I slid off too.

So, that's a bit of info I know about Demogorgon. Now that we know what Demogorgon does, let's see how we can utilize it in a match.

Gameplay Tips

Let's start off with the Portals, again.

The first thing we want to do upon entering a Trial, is to set up a Portal. You usually spawn either right next to a Generator, or between 2. Placing one now will save some time later.

Portal placement depends on your build. If you have information Perks, placing Portals between Generators is more beneficial, as it reduces the chance they get sealed.

If you're not running any information Perks, place them under Generators/Totems/whatever you want to protect. This will increase the chance they'll get sealed, but you'll also guarantee some info and maybe slowdown.

Portals are great for defending a 3-Gen. With their short cooldown, it'll be like you're everywhere at once (not really, but they are great for late-game).

If the Generator are all powered (or you closed the Hatch) and you need to protect the Exit Gates, place them under the Switch, like a Bear Trap.

If you have someone with a Flashlight chasing you around and you don't have a wall nearby, you can start placing a Portal and bait them into an easy hit.

Now that we got that out of the way, how does a Demogorgon loop?

If you played a bit of Huntress, Nemesis and maybe even Executioner, you'd have the basics covered.

Loop a tile so you have a straight line towards the Pallet/Window/both. This is what I meant by "looping wrongly".

Normally, you'd want to loop in such a manner, so that the Survivor doesn't get the Fast-Vault on a Window. As Demogorgon, you want to give them that "luxury".

Seeing as your Shred can only go in a straight line and takes a minimum of 0.65 seconds to charge, giving yourself the time to charge it is the best move.

Always ready your Shred when going around a corner, you lose barely any distance, and the Survivor is always forced to guess when you'll actually Shred them.

If a Survivor dropped a Pallet and you want to break it, destroy with Shred if there is any distance between you and the Pallet. If you get stunned, break it normally, it's faster.

Anything that I have missed will be in this video:

This is a great guide on Demogorgon's Shred, and I advice on watching all of Pyrus' Demogorgon related guides. They're not all up to date anymore, but they're still full with useful information.

Obscure Information

Some obscure tips and tricks I've learned over the course of my Demogorgon play time.

Hills (and elevations in general) are great for mobility.

Shredding off of a hill is all fine and dandy, but if you shred off of a hill, you can land on stuff you normally wouldn't be able to, like on a junk-tile for example, even Pallets, or through Windows.

You can also "butter" off of hills. If you want some more distance, look for objects around the hill and shred past them. If they have the right height, you'll momentarily land on them, but you'll continue sliding off because of the momentum and gain even more distance, and you will even have a shorter cooldown upon reaching the ground.

You can even use them mid-chase.

One important thing to know about elevations is that they have what I will call a "Damage Fall-Off".

You don't do less damage the higher you are, but if you are a certain distance above a Survivor, you won't deal damage to them if you land on them with a Shred. If you aren't too high up, however, you will injure them.

Add-Ons

Let's go over Demogorgon's Add-Ons now, shall we?

I made a quick Tier-List based on their strengths.

I won't go over each and every one of them because that'd take way too long, but I'll go over a few:

Leprose Lichen

Demogorgon's best Add-On for sure. Free Aura reading every time you teleport is huge.

Black Heart

Demogorgon's second best Add-On, it makes Shred have an even faster successful Attack cooldown.

Barb's Glasses

It's good, like a Brutal Strength on your Shred.

Mew's Guts

It's a good Add-On. 1 extra Portal and a faster missed Attack cooldown on your Shred.

Deer Lung

Terrible Add-On. Reduces your Portal amount by 2 while increasing your teleporting speed. Only use this if you're not planning on using Portals at all, with the Rotten Pumpkin Add-On, or on a basement focused build.

Violet Waxcap

Demogorgon's worst Add-On. It increases the duration of the Undetectable Status Effect upon exiting a Portal by 0.5 seconds.

Different Playstyles And Perk Builds

One of Demogorgon's biggest strengths is how flexible he is. You can play aggressive, defensive, a hybridized playstyle or play for the memes.

Whichever one you choose, it's up to you, but here is 1 Perk build for every playstyle (there are infinite possibilities for a memes, so I'll only cover a few).

But first things first, here's a build you can throw together without using any Teachables:

Aggressive

Defensive

Hybrid

Basement

Stealth

Totem Protector

"Hagogorgon"

Remember, these are recommendations, you can swap each and every Perk however you want.

Here is the build I am currently using:

Save The Best For Last

Hot take: Save The Best For Last will slow down your learning process, and hurt you in the long run.

Save The Best For Last is like Shadowborn, it's an addiction. You know it's not good for you, but you still run it.

Why do I advise not running it? Because getting consistent value out of it means you are neglecting your Shred for M1s, greatly increasing the amount of time you waste chasing Survivors.

Chests

Quick little tip for reaching this far:

Chests are made of butter.

Is this useful? Barely, but it's really good on that giant tractor (whatever it is, I don't know) on Ormond. There's a guaranteed Chest spawn, and it makes that loop so much easier to deal with.

How To Deal With Demogorgon

This is for my Survivors having trouble with Demogorgon, or those that want to be ready for anything. While the above tips are all things to look out for, they're not going over Demogorgon's weaknesses, so let's go over them right now.

Demogorgon has trouble dealing with round tiles, usually junk-tiles. Round loops don't allow Demogorgon an easy hit with his Shred, due to their round nature. Try to loop Demogorgon on these kinds of loops.

Avoid shack at all costs. Shack is one of Demogorgon's strongest tiles, being able to guarantee a hit 99% of the time.

Avoid T/L walls. Same reasons as shack.

Also, avoid hills, because of the aforementioned reasons.

Avoid long, straight lines. Pretty self-explanatory. Shred goes in a straight line. Avoid running in straight lines.

Looking behind you. I can't count how many times I've hit a Survivor that wasn't looking behind them because they thought they were safe.

Don't drop Pallets and ShiftW. Demogorgon shreds through Pallets, faster than a majority of Killers. Pre-dropping will only hurt you later.

Flashlight. Demogorgon's camera can barely move after hitting a Survivor, which means he can be easily blinded and sometimes even lose chase. Don't get fooled however, Demogorgon can (and I will, if it's worth a try) shred through the blind.

1 more thing about the Shred. You can't react to it, if you try to react to the Shred, you'll get hurt. Try and dodge the Shred before Demogorgon actually uses it. Does this open you up for a mindgame? Yes, but if I were you, I'd rather go for a 50/50 than 100/0 that's not in my favor.

All I've done was talk about the Shred, let's take a quick look at the Portals.

Don't seal them unless the Demogorgon player is using them a lot. Sealing Portals is usually a waste of time.

Avoid Sealing Portals that aren't next to any Generators or Hex Totems. Those Portals are badly placed and sealing them will give Demogorgon his Portal back, and you don't want that
