What are the trials for?

The answer to this question is pretty obvious for the Entity, it's how it drains the survivors. But various snippets from trailers and in-game text make it seem like the survivors enter the trials semi-voluntarily. Why?

Because maby the entity erases there memories after each trail if there sacrificed

    I assume its like this.

If you don't participate the Entity will feed off your soul anyway.

If you participate you are gaining hope towards winning and not being feasted upon for a set amount of time, this also fattens you up with that delicious hope should you lose giving the Entity a more enjoyable feast.

So participate and have a chance at escape or stay at the fire and be guaranteed a bad time.

Every trial is a chance of escaping this place.
Of course you cannot escape the entity but the survivors have hope to do so.

The Entity feeds on strong emotions. The trials are meant to elicit strong emotional responses; particularly hopefulness.

What @Orion said sounds likely, though they could also get bored.
    Does anyone think that's possible?

It is, and they do. When they stop having strong emotional responses, they get cast out into the Void.

Wasn't the Void only for killers who don't follow orders/the Entity didn't manage to convince through torture?

The Void is for survivors devoid of hope or anything that the Entity could feed off of. I am not sure about the conversion for killers, but it does state that the Entity will spend forever breaking a person until they become a killer.

Oh ok, I remember in a dev stream they said that if a killer is not convinced to do as he's said the Entity will get rid of him/her and send them in the Void

Every trial is a chance to escape. The fire is a featureless place, with the fire itself being the only thing of use there. Each trial is a series of halls and fields that maybe, just maybe, have some tool, some note, some way to escape.

Though now I'm wondering, what if a survivor was to attempt to sacrifice themself in the fire.

Then he would link the flame and the age of fire would be pushed past its natural lifespan, preventing the age of dark from happening for a while longer.
