That Rare Great Survivor Game

So I picked up DBD about a month ago. Played constantly for a week, then occasionally for the next two, then took a few days off and figured I would come back for some daily challenged.

My first game back was amazing: Played a Huntress who was good, but not great (could hit hatchet throws, but not a guarantee, she had a strategy, but so did we).

It was a decent game, but by the time we got down to 1 gen left, there was only two of us remaining, both on death hook. We hid in the basement for a little bit and after walking out the other player made a bunch of hand signals (no idea what he was trying to communicate, only so much you can do with pointing). Anyway, Huntress showed up, chased him, so I jumped on a gen.

He fortunately ran her to the other side of the map. I didn't think he had a chance to keep her busy, but he did (I had empathy so I watched the chase, pretty sure a dead hard was involved, multiple pallets definitely were). Then I get to 90% and Merciless Storm kicked in.

Now this is probably a joke perk to experienced survivors who can hit it in their sleep, but when you are new it can be devastating. It was only the 3rd time I'd faced it in a game.

It was so incredibly satisfying when I actually completed it.

As the gen finished though, I saw my teammate go down and get picked up. I made a guess at which exit gate the Huntress would check first and rushed to the opposite.

As the seconds on the gate got close I heard the hum, then the heartbeat, then as the door opened she rounds a corner. I beat her out, but a couple seconds more and I don't.

It had the main element that DBD seems to be based around but is usually missing: tension. It was an absolutely thrilling game.

That same night

Laid on the ground after a nurse slugged with 3 survivors left.

Got stomped by a Huntress who hit Hatchet throws from what seemed like the other side of the map. I don't think we even got a gen halfway done.

Hit a Myers who ran 2 purple addons against a team with some people on yellow perks.

And a bunch of disconnects.

I think that sums up the love/hate relationship with DBD. When the game hits it is like no other. But it also has 'Why am I playing this?' thoughts more than any game I've ever played. And I think that is the crux of whether you stay a survivor: are you willing to endure a lot of awful for those rare gems of amazing.

That Huntress game is truly peak DbD right there, those kind of games no matter the outcome, I come out satisfied. Its why I think a rematch button should be a thing.
