Why did they choose a DbD-like for the Evil Dead game?

I don't know if this should be here or the off topic section since it deals with the genre as a whole instead of DbD specifically, but I'll put it here for now.

This is something I've wondered since its reveal. Why a DbD-like? Evil Dead is great, amazing even, but it doesn't have nearly the following to attract the playerbase needed to survive in the PvP scene. The 4v1 survival horror thing is an incredibly niche genre, so why make the Evil Dead game one instead of a single player experience like all the other TED games? It would have done so, so much better as a single player action/horror game.
