Matchmaking
(updated with more information, also this time without me bypassing the filter by using * instead of # to censor a veeeeery terrifying word)
So today I've been getting really weird matches. If a 0.3 hours player being matched with me wasn't enough, I've been also getting killers who don't know how to move, how to pick up, etc. What exactly is going on?
The new incentives seem to be absolutely screwing over the matchmaking. Ever since they came, the "lacking" roles are just filled with the weirdest players. It's either that or they just relaxed the MMR bracket too much.

Well, matchmaking is based on MMR, which is based on your performance and not hours in game, so...
But for real maybe there was no survivors available in this MMR range, someone left the lobby, and the game had to quickly find someone else. If there are enough players with simillar MMR they are matched together, but if there are not enough, well, as of right now there are no bots in normal games so it have to be someone.

Thing is, it wasn't a one time thing. Ever since incentives hit the game, I'm just matched with all kinds of people. Sometimes I get a 3k hours survivor against a 2 hours killer. Sometimes it's the opposite.

I would like to have an option, to wait longer but get a better fitting matching.

My nurse is at the bare minimum over the soft cap having versed True, Otz and Hens so far, but two days ago I got a Meghead with 46 hours. SBMM doesn't exist.

Thing is, I don't think it's even about SBMM anymore. With the incentives, they just match anyone with anyone for the sake of queue times. I used to like incentives, but I'm really starting to see them as an unnecessary evil.

Could be a SWF, if the completely new player is SWFing with someone with 2k hours then the match is going to be lopsided one way or another.

Forgive me if I got something wrong, but don't all players start with a baseline MMR, and after a few matches, the game adjusts the MMR accordingly? Wouldn't that cause new players to go against experienced high MMR players?
1 -
That would be straight up stupid. It should definitely be 0 MMR, then you grow.
0 -
That doesn’t work because what if, for instance, you are at 0 and lose a bunch of times in a row because you’re actually worse than the typical new player? You’re MMR needs to go down as you lose so it can’t just be at a hard cap floor.

It stays at 0. That's what happens. You will be faced with completely new players untill you get the hang of it.
The game can't entirely hand hold you. You only need a few games to get used to playing, then you'll win too.

That’s a terrible system, it would end up just having this massive clump of people all at about 0 who just win or lose against each other kind of randomly.
1 -
Well the current system where a 2016 player gets matched with someone who doesn't even know what the win requirement is doesn't seem better either.

Yes, Mandy mention it’s something like you start at a below average MMR like 800 out of 1000 with a new account or new killer character unless you already have a killer character at the 1600 softcap in which case you start new killer characters at 1200.
Also in addition to the comments above about swfs and backfill, keep in mind sometimes people make new accounts who have played before.

I really don't understand why new players start so high. This way, if the MMR bracket is too relaxed, situations like mine always happen.
Also, giving new players 5k hours killers and 5k hours killers new survivors shouldn't be a thing only because of smurfs.

There’s various reasons that can happen with any MMR system. They could be in a swf with a higher rated friend, someone with an outlier MMR could have been waiting a really long time for a match and had to be placed in the next available one so they aren’t waiting forever, it could be that someone dodged a lobby and left a gap and the system needed to fill the gap ASAP, etc. And if you just look at hours played it could even be someone who played before on a different system or different account who made a new one.

It’s not only because of smurfs.

Fresh account is 900. And I imagine there are some placement matches. If there weren't placement matches, someone with thousands of hours could make a fresh account and spent hundreds of hours smurfing before they climbed back to their original account's MMR. It's a way for the matchmaker to verify that an account is actually fresh.
