Forced Penance discussion

Continuing a series of threads on the least popular perks according to Nightlight, next up is Pyramid Head's perk Forced Penance (0.28% usage)

Forced Penance - Survivors who take a protection hit are inflicted with the Broken status effect for 60/70/80 seconds. Broken prevents Survivors from being healed.

Forced Penance is an interesting perk because it applies a fairly powerful effect, Broken, for 80 seconds when it triggers. It's not as powerful as Exposed, since a Forced Penance hit doesn't instantly down a healthy survivor, but it does guarantee that survivor will stay injured for a decent amount of time.

And while Protection Hits might not sound that common, they do seem to happen in probably most matches because so many survivors will try and body block a killer to try and prevent a down or hook on someone else. Especially since the rework there are a lot of altruistic survivor players trying to use Endurance effects for body blocks.

I personally like Forced Penance a bit and in particular use it occasionally when I'm doing a "backpack" build that includes, say, perks like Agitation or Mad Grit or Awakened Awareness or Starstruck. Getting a survivor Broken early on can maybe get you an easy down that much more quickly, which is pretty nice!

All that said, though, it's definitely possible to have games, especially against solo survivors, where they just aren't that altruistic and stay split up and the perk might not trigger. And every now and then you run into a survivor who doesn't mind staying injured or has a perk that buffs them while injured so they don't mind being Broken as much. So the perk can be a little hit or miss.

Overall I'm not sure this perk actually needs a buff, it's got a niche of sorts and when it works it does work pretty well. I think it's just that when people set up builds that Forced Penance might be good in they tend to use Exposed perks instead. If the devs ever did want to buff this to make it more generally used, though, there are a couple of ways to maybe do it.

  • They could increase the duration. 80 seconds is already long but obviously if it's even longer then that makes it that much better.
  • They could increase the range of Protection Hit triggers a bit. Currently if a survivor takes a hit within 10 meters of an injured or currently carried survivor that is a Protection Hit. Increasing the 10 meter range a bit would help the perk trigger more often. Note that this also would buff Mettle of Man and We're Gonna Live Forever since they both benefit from Protection Hits.
