Buff Keys.
Keys were overnerfed. Yes I agree they were problematic before, but we asked for a nerf, not to make them near useless. I hate when BHVR does this. Bringing a Key nowadays is completely selfish, because all it does is potentially guarantee you will get a hatch escape depending on how the match goes, but you're honestly much better off bringing something like a Toolbox, as this helps the whole team by speeding up repairs. Sure, they have their Add-ons, but there's VERY FEW of those, and honestly only the Blood Amber is particularly good.
In exchange for the nerfs Keys got, they should get more Add-ons to give them new effects. Some could be Aura reading, but ones that give Keys an entirely new effect would be acceptable as well, and just leave opening the hatch as a secondary, side thing that Keys can do if you end up in that situation. Maybe even a new basekit effect on Keys would be nice too, although it could be small.
This would at least make them somewhat viable, as they're currently the most useless items around.

I have to disagree. Keys still have useful effects, such as the wedding ring and the gold token give you crazy knowledge on your teammates at times of your choice. Keys basically act as an extra aura reading perk.

several buffs for the keys have already been suggested, and the best in my opinion is making them open the gates in 2 seconds, the same time it takes to open the hatch (the interaction would be the same, there's no way to leave 99 %, if you complete the interaction bar, open the gate immediately or if not complete, remain at 0% for manual opening, reseting interaction)
So they maintain concept and utility, pushing the killer to monitor either the hatch or the gates when there is one survivor left.

Being selfish is not a problem. The problem is acting selfishly for your own sake and not fixing the generator. Only for the hatch.
Keys are not a problem.
But I am a bit in favor of adding the capability. I disagree with the default aura reading because it is too useful, but I can't think of a good idea.
In the green key discussion, I commented that it would be nice to be able to grant add-ons by releasing the potential of items placed on the ground. How about granting add-ons to other people's items by expending a large charge?

Easiest way to rework keys: make it so it opens the hatch only for The keyholder, then it closes immediately.

the gates can only be opened when all the generators are done or the hatch closed (one survivor), so there's nothing "toxic" - unfair like old hatch system.
But nothing prevents killers from tunneling for any reason, and i've seen lobbies with 1 medical kit and they (killers) were running fd anyway.
ps: as for switch items in last 5 seconds on the lobby, this should have been fixed a long time ago (can't swap on last 15 seconds for survivors), and it is with any item, not exclusive for keys. But the items don't have to be shown directly to the killer, just an icon indicating that the survivor carries an item on top of his head like the prestige icon

That point is pretty moot considered the hatch only appears when there's one survivor left anyway

Ummm.... How is that exactly?
Keys are still very useful with the right addons, on demand bond, on demand bond on the killer, unlimited aura reading on the obsession that you can give to a teammate if your the obsession, ability to open hatch after the killer closes it which is basically a free escape whike the killer patrols doors.

what if keys allowed you to open chests instantly. Or make opening them and possibly gates 50% faster or something. Could be basekit or could be addons.
