Slippery Meat discussion

Continuing a series of threads on the least popular perks according to Nightlight, next up is the generic survivor perk Slippery Meat (0.46% usage)

Slippery Meat - Grants up to 3 extra escape attempts on the hook. Hook escape attempts have a 2/3/4% increased chance to succeed.

Since probabilities are the point of the perk, here's a quick review.

  • Without any other benefit, you have a 4% chance to escape per attempt and have three attempts, so you have about an 11.5% chance of pulling yourself off a hook base kit in three attempts.
  • With Slippery Meat and no other boost, you have six attempts with 8% each of success. That a little more than triples your overall success rate to 39%.
  • If you also throw on a 3% Luck offering, your overall chance in six attempts goes to 50%
  • If you load up with Up the Ante that gives a 9% boost per attempt, you're up to a 67% chance to pull yourself off.
  • And if you combine Up the Ante with the 3% Luck offering, you're up to 74% chance to pull yourself free

All this goes to say Slippery Meat, on its own without being paired with any other Luck boosts, does give you roughly a coin toss chance of freeing yourself in an emergency. And with Luck boosts added in you actually can get it to work most (though not all) of the time.

Which brings up the ultimate question - is being able to pull yourself off a hook 40-75% of the time worth a perk slot? On its face it certainly sounds like it has some value, but then again if you try and fail then now you've lost a hook state and almost 60 seconds you could have stalled getting to second stage compared to just waiting for another survivor to rescue you. Not to mention that if you wait for another survivor to rescue you then often that person can also heal you fairly quickly afterward as well. So there's considerable risk if you fail your self rescue attempts and the benefit of doing it may not quite match that risk.

Ultimately the best strategy is usually to simply wait until you get rescued by someone else unless it is obvious that nobody is coming. The exception is when a perk like Deliverance, for example, is giving you a guaranteed 100% chance of success. Deliverance of course comes at its own cost of inflicting Broken status for a while and having a precondition to activate it beforehand, but even with those limitations it's still much more popular than Slippery Meat simply because it completely avoids that risk of failure.

I think Slippery Meat probably won't see much more than niche use by people who enjoy the coin toss randomness of it. It probably feels great when it works, and maybe that's enough reason for its current users to enjoy it. 🙂 But I think for this perk to see more use, the game actually probably needs to look at adding some additional secondary benefit to increasing your Luck stat and then change Slippery Meat to being a Luck bonus instead of just a Hook rescue bonus. If the game ever made Luck do something else worthwhile in addition to increasing your chance of pulling yourself off the hook then perks like Slippery Meat and Up the Ante and Luck offerings could all see more usage.

I'm not really too sure what to do with this perk. On one hand, it's fun to go in a match with your friends and all run it + Up the Ante and basically everyone can unhook themselves, lol. But on the other hand it's not really worth the perk slot on its own and if you want that flexibility, Deliverance is typically better as long as you're not the first chased. Being Broken for the guaranteed self-unhook is more than worth it as long as you use it correctly.

Like I've said before, I think luck should be expanded to affect chest loot as well, but that's about it. Beyond that, Slippery Meat could maybe use some better numbers if you want to make it more viable on its own and a secondary effect which I don't have a lot of ideas for right now admittedly.

It's pretty much only really seriously usable in a SWF where 4x Up the Ante is in play, but if it is:

    Base unhook chance: 4% Base + 4% Slippery Meat + (9*4)% Up the Ante = 44%

    Unhook chance over 6 attempts: 1 - 0.56^6 = 96.9%

Chance that all four survivors unhook themselves: 0.969^4 = 88.2%

If you're stacking Salty Lips the chances get even more ridiculous, but dedicating 2 perk slots to give the entire team deliverance basically destroys any pressure the killer has in the early game and can be very strong if used properly. It also messes with the killers idea of roughly where the team is, since unlike deliverance there's very little indication of it being a kobe if you're not paying attention to the hud while the self-unhooking is taking play (and even then, if they get lucky and do it first try which happens 44% of the time then there's literally no indication of it being a kobe if you just look at the hud)

I'd argue that Slippery Meat is to Deliverance what No Mither is to Unbreakable. It pisses off survivors if only one person is running it and it pisses off the killer if the entire team is running it (Since then they can actually get value from it)

Funnily enough the self-unhook part of the build can be pretty reliable with just 4x Up the Ante and 4x Salty Lips (88.9% self unhook chance across 3 attempts). Slippery Meat is pretty much only really useful in that setup for freeing up your offering slots for stuff like hook and map offerings, and for not tipping off the killer exactly what's gonna happen that game when they see 4x Salty Lips

You have flat 8% with t3, you need exta perks and offering to make it even usable.

Total outdated garbage that can be removed, since it's base perk, nobody will be offended.
