Settle a friendly debate !

Hi !

I was playing survivor this evening with a friend on comms. We're very much casuals and not particularly good at surviving, but we try and get at least marginally better.

I'm sorry for the whole block of text that follows, I just want to give as much context as possible since I'll be going to bed and reading eventual replies in the morning.

The details of what happened :

Our last game was on RPD, against a double iridescent add-on Doctor who was honestly playing quite chill and with a very relaxed build. Guy was pretty much playing on two perks, because of an early cleansed hex and him bringing Lightborn inexplicably even though we had no flashlight. He is not the focus of this debate. Great player overall (though he did slug for the 4k, that dirty devil).

(I am biased, I love going against Doctors and his addons were sick as hell)

At 1 gen left, our Mikaela teammate is already dead, and our Jake teammate is being chased, injured, and on death hook. My friend and I are each healthy and at only 1 hook, on a gen that is rougly at 30%.

I decide that, since Jake is not that far from us, it would be good to take aggro from him so that he can reset and hop on a gen (preferably ours if he finds it). I can still tank a hook state and we're at 1 gen left, with my friend to keep working our gen while I'd be gone.

In my head, it was the correct play, but at the time my friend was not sure. He hadn't seen the Jake do much during the game, but I remembered he did loop the killer a fair bit and thought we'd benefit from being 3 to finish a last gen and open gates. I did decide to take the risk, and took the heat off of Jake.

Unfortunately, Jake kind of screwed me up (presumably) accidentally sandbagging me as I took a protection hit for him, and I was not able to keep the Doctor in chase for long, so I got hooked. Doctor then left to pressure my friend's gen, hooking him in the process, before coming back to interrupt Jake and I resetting. I was downed after a little looping and died. By that time, Jake had unhooked my friend last second, but left him injured to stealth around.

Doctor went back to them, found my injured friend and slugged him, before going to look for stealthy Jake. Unfortunately, my friend had to wait the 4 minutes bleedout timer, and Jake eventually was downed and sacrificed as well.

The debate :

Being a bit salty at the Jake who did not come to raise him (and at the killer), my friend insists that he had had a bad feeling about that Jake and that it was a bad play taking aggro from him. There are times for which to take aggro, and this was not one of them. It was a bad play.

Which retrospectively, it was. Jake was not that good and did not contribute much to the match (from endgame scoreboard), especially after I stuck my neck out for him.

However, I sincerely do not believe we could have finished the gen on time anyway if Jake had been downed and hooked, since we were not running any gen perk. Doctor had Chili and would have seen us, so I think it's kind of a moot point.

As I see it, by letting Jake die, we could have maybe gotten one or two escapes through gates, but that felt very far from given. If I went to take the heat off of Jake, we had better chances of either all 3 of us escaping (very optimistic), or at least a solid 2E, if the Jake was good. If Jake was not, then, well, 4K was on the table, though I did not think it was the most likely scenario at the time.

TL;DR : I went to take aggro from a solo teammate who was on death hook because both my friend and I were at 1 hook, at 1 gen left and with 1 dead teammate. The solo teammate proceeded to mess up and not be very useful the rest of the game, resulting in a 4K.

So, who's correct ? Was I wrong to take aggro ? Or was I right to attempt it ?

As I said, I gotta give my brain some sleep, but I'll read replies in the morning.

Thank you in advance for your insights ! =)

    So from my understanding:

    • You're at 1 gen left, 3 survivors currently alive
    • Killer is chasing a dead on hook survivor while you have a hook state left in you (And your buddy is pressuring the final gen)

If that's the full situation, then yeah you were completely in the right to try. It didn't work out due to the Jake making mistakes but the idea was the correct one. With a bit more coordination, you could've wasted enough of his time to make sure the last gen got done and maybe one of you could get out.

The only flaw in your idea would be if the Killer slugged you and kept going for Jake (Which if I was the Killer, I would have) but Jake could've maybe made it to safety by that point or the last gen could've got done.

Let's imagine how it would've played out if you hadn't tried to help Jake - he probably would've went down quickly, been hooked - dead. Now it's 2 v 1 at 1 gen. All Killer has to do is keep an eye on the gens and slug one of you and victory is essentially guaranteed. He's also playing Doctor, a killer with an anti-stealth ability so good luck trying to stall out for hatch

You had the right idea and game sense, your teammate made mistakes and that's just how it is. Survivor mistakes are costly

Thank you both for your input ! I feel very much vindicated.

As I said, my friend and I are quite casual and admittedly a bit too skittish when it comes to chases. We're trying to get a better game sense, and that's a lot of trial and error. I'm glad this was a good instinct to have, even if it did not pay off. Maybe in a future game it will.

Good luck to your next games =)
