My Disappointment in the Bone Chill Event

I hate writing this but wow, I'm very disappointed in this event. I legit held off playing earlier in the week to build anticipation and excitement for this and I'm just so let down. Here are my main takeaways.

First off, the easy ones

  1. No additional BP/special offerings. During the Halloween event, you could run the special offerings which gave pretty good BP bonuses but also, gave options to players to not play more game balance changing offerings (map offerings, hook offerings, moris, shrouds, wards). Obviously, players could and did still use them but the offerings gave people more options to choose a more relaxed game. Also, seeing the offerings at the beginning gave both sides a better idea of the type of game to expect.
  2. No special bloodweb offerings. So, technically there is the firecracker, but besides a broken key, it may be the most worthless item in the game. Its effects can be better covered by a perk (Flashbang) or even a flashlight which allows for multiple uses. Killers also get absolutely nothing, as far as I can tell. Even the removal of the boxes, while absolutely being needed to help speed up the leveling process, makes the bloodweb less festive.

I don't think anyone will have issues with my complaints above. But the elephant in the room (no, not you Mr. Puddles) is the snowmen changes this year. I find them to be absolutely abhorrent. Removing the protection of them while also allowing killers to use them is a lose/lose for survivors (which also makes it harder for chill killers). Last year, if the killer found me in a snowman, it just meant the chase started as normal but I have some sparkles on me. Now if I'm found goofing off in a snowman (which already meant I wasn't working on the objective, passively giving the killer an advantage, oops), it means I'm at best injured before the chase starts and at worst, instantly downed.

Yes, the ability to jump in the snowman mid-chase last year to get a free hit was bogus but to remove the protection means its now all downside. A better change would have been adding a 3-5 second unlock/unzip animation before allowing a survivor to jump in.

On the killer side then, jumping in the snowman means free Insidious and/or the ability to get close to the survivors unknowingly. Good stuff, adds a change of pace and can be goofy but survivors jumping in the snowman means...an unsafe place to hide? This doesn't seem like a good trade off and makes it no wonder the survivors don't interact with them as much which means all they have to do is focus on gens (especially if the killer is goofing off and not giving them a reason to be off gens). This is a sad situation for survivors (no bonuses for the event, less choice in the nature of the game) and killers (survivors have no reason to chill, leading to sweatier than expected or wanted matches) and is just another disappointment with the holiday event roll out.

Anyone else have a different experience?

I would have liked extra BP items or something but otherwise meh, it is all good really as daily login bonus stuff isn't bad. I think the snowmen are a lot better these days as they don't take hits for survivors and as killer nobody has the time to be insidious camping in snowmen when there are gens to be pushing survivors off.

Snowmen last year meant an extra hit to down survivors; effectively a third health state and with old DH it was often 4 health states to get a down - not fun for killers

I agree I like the daily login but they don't really encourage me to play the game. Which probably isn't a good thing.

I played last year though and I found the event fine. The amount of times a snowman was successfully used for a "4th" healthstate was miniscule compared to the time I saw survivors wasting in them goofing off. But at least it gave the survivors a reason to try to use them, even outside of chase, which slowed down the average game.

Now you are correct, insidious camping is generally worthless outside of doing it specifically to be a silly goose but then why have the snowmen at all? That is the crux of my disappointment. If the survivors don't get some sort of benefit from the snowman, they won't use them and then, because the survivors don't use them, it ruins the surprise of the killer being in the snowmen so now killers don't use them and we are back to square 1.

Yeah I guess there is the point of why even have them but I guess they are more a festive ornament than a game changing addition. I am still seeing both survivors and killers using them even though they obviously don't have much value.
