My Controller is bugging out

i have had a lot of problems with my controller recently while playing dead by daylight with it on pc.
since it is a rather old one it DCs sometimes from my computer and when i restart it the controller works perfectly fine in the game lobby and pause menu, but doesnt do anything in the actual game.
this has been quite infuriating since im not as good on mouse and keyboard and genuinely enjoy to rather play my games on a controller. if anyone knows how to lift this bug, please tell.
