KILLERS/CHAPTERS BASED OFF OF REAL PEOPLE?

In my view, having a chapter based on recent killings/atrocities just feels wrong. I would hate it. I don't want to see Jeffrey Dahmer (or a fictionalized version of him/character based on him) in DBD. I don't want to see Richard Ramirez, Samuel Little, etc.

But what about much older Killers, ones that are so far removed from society (meaning, no one alive today was alive at the time of the event)? How would you feel if BHVR was going to put out a Jack the Ripper chapter? Genghis Khan? Vlad the Impaler?

(IMPORTANT: For the sake of argument, let's focus the attention only on that specific question. Ignore angles like "I'd hate it because I know the powers would suck," (let's just pretend they'd be great) or maybe for legal reasons, that BHVR couldn't use someone's "likeness." Ignore all of that. What I'm curious about is how people would feel about the idea of using real people/events as Killers. What do you think of that? Is it fine if they're from hundreds of years ago? Is it fine if they're from a few decades ago?)

I mean we sort of already have a killer like that

The Doctor is heavily inspired by a real chinese doctor who uses "electro therapy" to cure gaming addictions. This is also why Feng is the chosen Survivor for Spark of Madness, being shes an eSports player and chinese

I didn't know that. Regardless, how would you feel about a direct chapter (not an "inspired by real events" chapter)?

To be fair BHVR has loosely done this with doc (bubba too but that's not BHVR).

As long as they do it extremely loosely like they did with doc and make it fun to play, we're ok going this route (minefield as it may be) We don't want an obvious rip off though.

Is it fair to say that even if it's from a thousand/hundreds of years ago, you still do not want a real serial killer being in DBD? So no Vlad the Impaler? But you would be fine with someone loosely based off of him being in the game?

That would be accurate. We want to keep alot of reality out of games (especially one involving hooking people violently like holiday decor, people can get WEIRD) but that's personal bias.

I mean I would be down, but I just dont see how they could make a power with it

Devs are usually pretty creative when it comes to these things tho, so Im sure they could come up with something

I agree. Personally, I would find it too disturbing to have a real person. I might be okay with someone very, very historical being in the game--but I'd prefer a fictionalized version of them (like Vlad the Impaler is really in the game as Dracula. So no real victims as Survivors, no historical accuracy about family, etc.).

Also The Ghost Face, Danny Johnson, is heavily based on the real serial killer Danny Rolling. Danny Rolling inspired the Scream Movies too but none of the characters were really that similar to Danny Rolling but Danny Johnson definitely is. A youtuber called MrBallen has a video about Danny Rolling and there are many similarities between the character and the real serial killer. It's pretty disturbing and it almost feels like they honoured him with the creation of Danny Johnson because of how similar it is. (Both stalked their victims and had sudden urges to kill, Johnson killed in Roseville and Rolling killed in Gainesville, after Rolling killed people he moved away from Gainesville and Johnson was about to do the same thing but thats when the entity took him)

Also these real murders took place in 1990, which means the family members of the victims are probably still alive today, and i think that is bad that this character was made so soon.

Personally i don't think characters should be inspired this closely to real life serial killers. I get they need inspiration but they need to be careful not to honour them.

Killing is not cool it's just tragic at the end of the day.

Inspiration, maybe. They've done it before with Doc (sorta), Clown and GF, though you could just as easily argue that that is iffy as well.

I would not want them to use actual killers though. That is quite simply glorifying them. IRL murder is not something to be taken lightly.

Didn't know that bout ghostie. Go figure.

Agree that they shouldn't be honored which is why we stressed (or failed to) loosely. Doc is so far away from the human that it's effectively a trivia tibbit. BHVR didn't have a say for bubba (but is pretty far away from the human inspiration) and made their own ghostie with the official mask (not sure how this one stacks up).

I'd like a fictionalized version of Elizabeth Bathoroy as a vampire instead of Vlad the Impaler myself.

I think it'd be quite unhealthy. Having killers be written into legend and pop culture is part of the reason why so many people feel "inspired".

    It's true.

Just watch "This psycho inspired "Scream"" on YouTube by MrBallen and you'll see. (idk if im allowed to embed/share it here)

Jack the Ripper would be awesome, but only if he has a Loch Ness Monster cosmetic outfit.

Something recent or immediate? Yeah, that would be in bad taste.

Otherwise? Meh. Dahmer, Gacy, Gein and co. are already essentially movie monsters in pop culture. Would prefer to see more licensed killers personally - still holding out hope for Pumpkinhead or Candyman.

Or even my long desired giant spider killer...

First time I started playing DBD I got John Wayne Gacy vibes from The Clown. Not his story, but more the visual look.

An iconic older killer like Jack the Ripper could be cool I suppose, but generally considering they are just regular guys, I don't think a chapter introducing someone like Jeffrey Dahmer could be at all interesting, they would have to change them up so much to make them interesting that they may as well pick something else that's already interesting instead of trying to force it.

I think actual direct real people, no but inspiration, yeah. Like others have said, Doctor was based off a real Chinese doctor (however Chinese players said China would ban the game if he went live, so that's when BHVR rewrote his lore to be a black man instead and had him involved in the CIA's MK Ultra mind control experiments instead.) Then like was said, clown is totally inspired by John Wayne Gacy... He's a serial killer clown.
