Can someone explain cleaning totems to me?
What I mean is, why do some survivors go around the map cleansing all the totems when they know there is a good chance one of their teammates has CoH or another boon perk? It's frustrating going to an area you know there should be a totem, and you find a pile of broken sticks and bones. So why do they do it?

Most probably for those ridiculous tome challenge "Cleanse X(up to 20) totems"

Bloodpoints.
You dont know if the Killer has Hex: No One Escapes Death or not.
Archive Challenges.
Perks (such as Inner Healing).
Etc.

seems like the thread owner doesnt really play the game 💀

People can do whatever they want. I wouldn't sweat it.

People may have totem perks, achieves, play around NOED or just get some bp. Cleansing is apart of the game and people are insensitive to do it for several reasons.

Challenge. 99% that is challenge. When it happens I need to do it, I also bring "Inner healing".

Inner Healing, Rift challenge, preventing NOED. It also gives good points.

BP, tome challenges, and Inner Healing come to mind.

Most frequently tome.
Followed by emblem points/BP in general
Also an option but rather rare: perks that require you to cleanse
Some people get paranoid about NOED, and I can see where they're coming from. But if it hasn't been "NOED o'clock" people usually don't bother

'Cause bone statues aren't allowed.

I don’t know about you, but my generation was taught ‘do bones’.

If one of my teammates doesn't put down a boon in the opening minutes of the match, I'm going to view the totems as fair game.
It can be a waste of time, but it can also circumvent NOED. If the match is sweaty I won't bother, but if it's kinda slow, I will. And in my experience, less skilled killers tend to run NOED, and often the matches where NOED makes an appearance are the ones you have time to burn.
And as others have pointed out, there are perks that require you to cleanse totems.

Inner Healing
NOED

why? because they don't have boon totem perks and the game doesn't tell them who does. so... in that case a few bloodpoints are better than the risk of a delayed hex like noed or the one that makes you scream.
or they're running the heal upon cleansing a totem perk or one of the other totem cleansing perks.
that's my guess.

I just do it specifically to upset the Boon Players. I mean, others sandbag at loops or farm you at hooks, I feel my case of survivor self sabotage isn’t so bad lol…

I rather destroyed it then seeing it getting snuffed out.

Because people who suck at chase need to get boldness BP somehow.

Most likely tome challenges. But some might be like me and feel, that boons are still overused and unfun and want to make a point showing, that you can still do bones and escape; mind you, this isn't the same as sandbagging the team.
With a proper bone hunter build you can sometimes cleanse all 5 totems in like 2:30-3:30min, and if the killer was running NOED by any chance, you countered it, by "doing bones" and cleansing quite some hexes along the way. Not doing gens for a while is of course slowing the game down, but it's far from throwing, I have escaped a lot while doing bones.
And Mikaelas are the devils get, evil hellspawns, so throwing them off a bit is a nice bonus.

Cause Survivors can't see the perks their teammates bring
Why leave Totems up if no one put a Boon on it already
NOED.... simple enough
