The early survivors and killers are seriously underdeveloped.
In my opinion, I think that anyone released in 2017 or later is perfectly fine, but earlier folks (Nea, Nurse, Lisa, Ace, and the original cast) could use some more detail.
Should/Would the Devs ever go back and change their in-game backstories to be more fleshed out? What are some things you would like to see for specific characters?

The only way they could flesh out their backstories is through the use of another lore stream, which will be awhile till we get those again. But the way i see it, is that they want you to flesh them out yourself. Take Ace for example, the people that he had to pay his debts too were dangerous people, probably in a gang of some sort that would kill anyone that failed to pay them back.
Ace being the slimeball that he is, was probably so slick and smug, that he was always able to gain himself more time when they came too collect and he didn't have the money that was needed.
Nea was probably in a gang as well, who were known for vandalizing the streets through their use of art and spray paint. Nea has probably been through a lot as a child, which would be the reason for her rebelling in her adult years.
We don't know but bits and pieces of each of their backstories. That's up to us to decided.

WARNING: WALL OF TEXT
This is my take on the lore. I spent way to much time on this, but I love writing so I kinda got carried away.
Dwight
For Dwight, I see him as a nervous, but considerate guy who grew up as the underdog for as long as he could remember. His story, in my eyes, was that he was a target since he was a child for bullies and it stuck with him throughout his school years. His family life was good at least. His dad would tell him to stand up for himself but he never gathered the courage to do so and instead opted for the evasion route. He knew where to blend in a crowd and who to stick with to avoid trouble. He avoided causing a scene as much as possible and tried to keep from drawing any attention to himself, leaving most of his identity a blank page for everyone. They usually just saw him as the dorky, nervous kid who they might borrow a pencil from in the middle of class. This changed very little after he graduated and found a job. He kept from building bonds with his coworkers in fear that they would turn on him. His social life was centered around his family and the few friends he stuck with in school. He was too afraid to form new relationships. But after being taken by the entity, this all changed. He was suddenly the one who was the most qualified, as he is the most skilled at evading danger. The others who were trapped there with him needed someone to point them in the right direction. After many trials of working together as a team, it was futile to pretend that there weren't bonds being built between them. They suffered here together but they rely on each other. Though still a nervous, jumpy person, Dwight no longer fears building bonds with others.
Claudette
In Claudette's case, I see her as a classic introvert. Mostly keeping to herself in the corner of the classroom, she kept herself busy with her homework. She is an intelligent person. Almost any question the teacher asked, she knew the answer too but she was rarely brave enough to raise a hand. She had a small group of close friends and a loving, supportive family that did everything they could to nurture her talent in botany. In her off time, she was usually at home, her nose buried in books with a warm cup of coffee and some relaxed music playing through the speakers of her earbuds. She was empathetic as well, doing what she could for those in need since she was a kid. Ever since she was little, she'd feed the wild cats that roamed her neighborhood. She loved to help others and this never changed. Even after the coming leap she would take. Leaving her small hometown to attend college was the scariest thing she'd ever have to do, or so she thought.Suddenly at a loss and surrounded by strangers, she turned her attention to the internet where she could keep in touch with her friends and family. They would always ask new questions about her studies and she was always glad to answer. Her friends were impressed with how much she knew. It was them who convinced her to make a blog surrounding botany. She was afraid at first, but with the barrier of a screen, it was easier for her to interact with people. She was surprised at how fun it turned out to be, answering questions and chatting with others who shared her interests. She even made a few friends online that she kept in touch with. They were the fist to notice her sudden disappearance. Last they heard from her, she said she needed to take a walk to clear her head. But instead of clarity, she found a world of turmoil and pain. But she knew that, now more then ever before, her skills were needed. The others around her, who she could call friends, they needed her to patch them up when things got bloody. She can't afford to lock herself away anymore. Her empathy is far stronger then her shyness.
Meg
Now for Meg, I see her as a wild child. Filled with unbound energy, she was a piece of work for her mother, especially since Meg's father had abandoned them. She took her energy out with mischief, pulling pranks on the others around the neighborhood and being a complete pest. Even in school, she could rarely sit still. In middle school, this energy was noticed by the coach of the track team. He was good friends with Meg's mother and she's told him countless stories of the trouble she'd get herself into. Seeing her potential, he knew that this energy was better focused then restrained. He offered a position on the team, convincing her with the promise that she could get out of class early to do so. But once her feet hit the clay, she didn't need anymore convincing. Finally finding a way to release her pent-up spirit, her name began to come up more and more in lunch-table conversation around the school. Before the year was up, she was a frequent figure in the school paper. Her rise to athletic fame continued steadily throughout high school and she was eventually approached with a scholarship from a college across the country. But despite her wild spirit and being surrounded by praise, Meg was a humble person. She never bragged about her talent. But she also scarcely opened up to others. Only to her mother and couple close friends did she ever share her deepest frustrations. One of the sources of her seemingly endless energy, was her father. Not many knew the anger and confusion she harbored toward the man she never met. And this anger only got stronger as she grew up and came to understand all her mother had done for her. When her mother became ill, she gave everything up to care for her. She wouldn't abandon her, like her father had. But she still loved to run. And every day, while the sun set, she would go for a quick sprint to relax. Unfortunately, she found herself running headfirst into trouble again. She found herself in a place where her boundless energy was needed more than ever. Even here, she refused to be restrained, she refused to be held back, and she refused to abandon others. Knowing how that feels, she wouldn't wish that pain on her new friends. But despite meeting the others and forming strong bonds, she was haunted by another worry. Her mother was now left alone. She often fears that her mother thinks that she'd abandoned her also.
Jake
As for Jake, he grew up surrounded by wealth and opportunity. Anything he needed, he had, without having to lift a finger. He attended a well-renowned school, the kind with edible food in the cafeterias and classy uniforms. Jake didn't care much for any of it but, at the time, it didn't get to him much. He did well in school, with a fair mix of Bs and As, maybe a C once in a while. By classic standards, he was doing alright. But his father's standards were different. Anything under an A was unacceptable and was met with lengthy lectures. His father constantly compared him to his older brother. Jake's relationship with his brother was good, but he couldn't help but feel angry when he thought about him. Anything Jake did, he could do better and his father was always reminding him of that. It didn't help that his father was rarely home. Being a busy man, he was always away, sometimes for days. The few days they had together were usually filled with lectures and, as Jake grew up, they would devolve into full-blown arguments. His father would shout about how much he'd done for Jake and why he couldn't be more like his brother. Jake would yell about how he wasn't his brother and that he'd never asked for all this. The arguments would end with one or the other storming out of the room. Jake rarely showed it, but he was left in tears after some of the harsher arguments they had. His mother did what she could to encourage him as he grew up. She understood that Jake wasn't an academic person and that he was breaking under the pressure. The pressure that had steadily been getting worse throughout the years. She would tell him that his father loved him just as much he loved his brother and that everything he did came from a good place. Jake tried to believe her, but never could. She often tried to urge her husband to go easier on him and even got him to apologize a few times, but the relationship between father and son was never ideal. One day, during a week away from work, Jake and his father got into another heated argument. But this one was far worse than usual. Jake's mother attempted to break it up but she was drowned out by the yelling. With all three of them in tears, Jake yelled one last sentence at his father before storming out of the house into the storm, his mother calling after him. He didn't come home. He, instead decided to live a life completely different than the one he had before. Using what money he had, he bought what he needed and hiked into the woods. Finally away from the bustling maids, the constant lectures, and the straining pressure, he was, at last, at peace. He made an effort to never speak with his father again, but did what he could to communicate with his mother throughout the couple years that followed. But, when the communication suddenly stopped, she became worried and called the police. They scanned the forest best they could, but could never find him. As for where he went, Jake was now under pressure again. But at this point, he knew how to survive. He would do what he could to stay alive. He wouldn't let anyone break him again. As for the others, he kept to himself mostly, but it was nice to have company. Especially since they spoke words of encouragement and sought to build each other up, not bring each other down.
I have some for the killers as well, but they're WAY longer. I could include them if you want but there's quite a lot.

Its simply a shift in design choices. Back then the lore of the game and character simply didnt mattter that much, and in my opinuon still dont matter enough to warrant retconning everything.
Additionally a detailed backstory might sully the image of a killer.
I for example cannot see the legion as anything but angsty teens. They didnt planned their first kill, were squeamish in executing it and except their leaders theyre just sheep.0 -
If you use Wayback Machine and go to the DBD Gamepedia, Evan (Trapper) and Philip (Wraith) have seriously different backstories. Sally's (Nurse) is also slightly different I believe, but I prefer her current one.
The core of Evan's is roughly the same, except that he personally fired or "made disappear" those that were caring for his father, Archie. Archie started mentally failing, but he didn't look like he was eating anything and wouldn't talk to anyone but Evan. Eventually, he just disappeared. Evan wasn't his enforcer in the explosion. He did it on his own. And he went and killed several neighbors. The rest is the same.
Same goes for Philip. The differences being we learn his boss's name (Azarov, hence his weapon being Azarov's Skull) who didn't slash the kid's throat, instead resorting to choking him to death, and Philip wasn't directly told by Azarov what he was doing. Then he took a crowbar and bashed Azarov's skull in until it is nothing more than a wet mass of red flesh (which doesn't exactly work with his weapon)
Sally's is mostly the same, except it doesn't mention the ambulance at the end and it has a few minor changes.
To be honest, they might not be official, but they were on there until Kenneth (Clown) came out, so... I'll consider them the official lore until proven wrong.

Also, you seem to have left Laurie and Michael off the list. Lisa's backstory is fine, but they seriously need help. And don't give me the whole "they are licensed" argument for them. Leatherface, Quentin, Freddy, Tapp and Amanda all have really good backstories and they are licensed.

i dont like the wiki's version of the trapper. i liked him being his dads enforcer not an independent mass murderer. he seems more brutal to me as someone who would do anything for his farther without hesitation and mercy and became so use to it that he enjoyed it.

He seemed more brutal in the former one, to me. He wasn't his father's enforcer, but he was doing what he was for his father's sake, only to turn on him in the end. It made him seem a lot colder than the new version does.

fair enough. i think him being his fathers enforcer gives him a bit of an obsessive side. for each of the versions of him we're talking about, i think of him differently. with the version i prefer he seems more brutal, fast, obsessed and unrelenting but with the wiki's version he seems more cold, calculating and will wait for the kill. im not actually sure why i see them like i do, i just know which one i prefer.

I totally agree. I compare what they've come up once they got the snowball rolling (Huntress, Spirit, Legion bachstories) and you can see they're really hitting their stride.
I think early on before they had the resources to take a moment to breath and consider where they wanted this thing to go they had to simply make do with what they had. They didn't have time to develop interesting stories or characters. That's why we have the "Wraith", who isn't really a wraith, just called that. He worked at a truckyard until one day he didn't, and then he got a magical bell and turned into a monstrous killer. WHAT.
Also Nurse, who teleports around. because yeah, nurses totally teleport. Or knockoff Leatherface, made all the more redundant by the fact the game took off and they got permission to use the real iconic chainsaw killer. It's pretty clear they didn't have vision back then: they needed to focus on other things.
But yeah, judging by the improvements (Such as Legion/Jeff being linked in their lore, as well as the map) they are improving. I hope they find a cheap way to introduce more lore and character development, such as webcomics or even short stories. Something to give us more reason to care about these character, if we care, we'll be invested and possibly feel afraid in-game because we know of the implications. As it is, we're just empty avatars running around, for the most part. There is so much untapped potential!

I see it as a great opportunity to add more story to their bios, as the beginning killers and survivors have little to begin with due to early development, but they have many priorities, fixing the game and all, they should have the creators of the story work on that as the department does all work on different things?
