I think whole DLC system is slowly getting out of hand. Overall I don't think it would be bad move to make base game free.
But they would have to fix hacking issue first. Free dbd on Epic have created tons of account they can get cheap.

If game went free to play we probably wouldn't get stuff like event tome cosmetics and free charms. I believe paid online games are always usually better deals for the consumers.

They still have tons of DLC and skins.
Free base game might not be bad move, it would make it easier for players to bring their friends into DBD, or some people might just try it and see how it goes.
But hacking is still an issue.

I think the monetization is pretty bad right now, but this actually seems to be a hot take on the forums.
If they made the game f2p it would give them the leeway to make it worse. For example make it so completing the rift pass doesn't give you all the auric cells back. Events would no longer have free skins. Characters cost more iridescent shards.
Idk it's just something that i noticed with a few online games i used to play, once they became free to play i started to feel like the game had less value. They make small things like charms twitch drops that you have to watch hours for, new content gets way more social media drum up and teasing etc.
