How do you swap between two items?

So with the new update we can now hold a special item in addition to a med-kit for example. My question is how do you switch between the special item and a med-kit? Example: holding a med-kit, pick up the new EMP thing. Both are now in my inventory but it won't let me use my med-kit. Is there a button to swap which item you want to use? I play on Nintendo Switch.

    Special items override normal items. You can't use your normal item until you use or discard your special item
