As Survivor once the gates are open, does the Me in team take priority over the Team itself?

When playing Survivor on DbD, working as a team gives the highest percentage chance of escaping, there is no doubt about that. But do you think that this still the case once the gates are open?

What I mean by this is, although we need each other to stay alive in order for each individual to have the best chance of getting out, if someone wanted to stand at the gate, wait for the last Gen to pop, open the Gate and leave even with 2 team mates currently on the hook in the 1st hook state and 1 being chased the other side of the map, do you think the Survivor should be obligated to go for the rescues, even if there is a 100% chance they will be able to make the safe unhooks, or does that Survivor have every right to leave them for dead in order to escape?

I believe the latter is true when it comes to being obligated, but of course most of us are going for those unhooks anyway, but if that survivor did decide to leave, is ridicule for their decision justified? I don't believe it would be justified to ridicule them for it as the end goal as Survivor is to escape nothing more, what about you guys?

I ask this because after playing DbD for about 4-5 years now, I really want to engage with the community more, and hear what the community has to say regarding all sorts of things, especially as my pool of friends who play this game is limited to about 3 people so I can't get very many different perspectives.

I love this game, and I always want to understand it and the community better.

It’s pretty situational but it generally boils down to - do I think I have at least a 50-50 chance of us both getting out if I go for the save.

Like if NOED is up, I’ll try and hunt down the totem (since I’m not going near you if that totem’s up) but not if it puts me close enough to the killer that I can’t make it back to an exit gate, trigger that last 1%, and vámonos.

If they’re face camping you and I’m the only one around I might try and draw them out but odds aren’t great. If there’s 2 or 3 buzzing around the chances are better.

If someone fully opened a gate triggering the end game collapse and you’re too far away though, there’s sometimes not much I can do. If you were hooked before the gate was opened then blood warden could still be triggered if I get downed and hooked trying to save you. If that happens far enough into the collapse timer, the unhook just rescheduled your sacrifice out 20-30 seconds (along with the rest of the team).

I wouldn’t necessarily ridicule someone for escaping (out loud) while I’m on hook. I usually assume either they maybe don’t know about 99ing gates, or just made a possibly incorrect assessment of the situation. I don’t assume malice or intentional abandonment. That isn’t to say I’m not tallying up all the times I intentionally distracted the killer when they were about to have a teammate in their field of view and watching those distant, yellow, blobs on the map remain suspiciously stationary aside from the occasional t-bag which I can only assume is signaling in Morse code that help is coming any day now. In those moments I wish I could get lucky and unhook myself so the killer can rehook me and blood warden those jerks. But those are buried, secret thoughts.

I usually always try to get saves in end game, even if I die for it

Its their right to leave if they wish; lots of people forget that escaping is your own objective, and going back in is risky regardless of the situation.

I'll happily attempt to save, but if I sense a bloodwarden, or I deem it to risky, I will leave and abandon the other survivors.

It really depends. Killer, hook position, and many other things factor into whether a save should be attempted or not. I'll usually give a genuine attempt at getting everyone out if I think it's reasonable, but I'm not charging back in against a Bubba.

I tend to value altruism more than my own survival so I will almost always go back for the save. If I’m worried it’ll mean we both will just die then I’m less likely to do so because well, what’s the point in neither of us getting out?

You have every right to leave if you want. But as it is a team game, I think it's normal to expect some people to call you out on it

I always try to save provided by my other teammates don't charge out the gate. The only other exception being if i'm on death hook and you're on the other side of the map/basement against a strong killer or one that excels at camping. No sense in both of us dying.

It's an interesting question. I asked myself how I feel on either side of that scenario, and the truth is that I do feel an obligation to go back for people, as long as it's not a lost cause. And, I do feel like my teammates have an obligation to go for me, if it's not a lost cause.

I'm not sure exactly why, but I think... there are times in the late game where maybe you do something risky, or take the aggro on purpose, or go down committing to the last gen, and you do that with the expectation that your team will be there for you in the endgame -- you're making a play that benefits the team with the idea that you will continue to benefit from being part of the team.

If the norm was for everyone standing to just peace out as soon as the gates were open, I think people would make their decisions more selfishly all match and it would be a lot less fun.

Basically this. In the example given, the killer is occupied. There's no reason NOT to get the 2 unhook. If the killer was face camping and/or NOED was in play, most ppl would understand cutting your losses, but in the example given... it sounds like super easy saves.

Like some others have said it's very situational. But if there was for whatever reason 100% of said survivor unhooking someone and both of them getting back to the exit safely, then anyone who understands anything would go for the "free save". In simplest words there's way too many variables to definitively answer your question.
