Question about Pinhead Box

If you solve it while he is carrying a Survivor, does he drop them? Is this a clever way to prevent a teammate being hooked, or does he have to activate teleporting himself? Does he always have a choice?

    Pinhead has to manually drop the survivor and then use the teleport button. Frankly, it's better to ignore the box if you've already committed to the pick up, because the window to make the teleport is very short.
