Does Dead by Daylight even HAVE a canon?

So, a streamer I am friends with wants a simple yes or no answer this this question:

"Are the new Legion comics canon?"

I have tried to explain to her that Dead by Daylight lore is a multiverse, so there is no one single canon. Even the in-game lore with Tome #3 contradicts part of The Legion's origin story. I've tried many ways to explain this to her, but she want's a YES OR NO. Is The Legion comics canon?

She basically is ignoring me on this issue because I'm trying to get her to understand it's not a simple yes or no question as even in-game lore contradicts itself many times over, yet she doesn't know that cause she never reads in-game lore anyway (which is also part of the issue I think.)

So, now it's got me coming to... kind of ask, is there even a canon and how would YOU answer the question? Yes, or no? She's like "If BHVR says it's canon then it is, but if they aren't saying, then it's no."

DBD is a multiverse which means there isn't only one singular canon as every character in the dbd universe has their own lore and story that are canon to them and the overall universe of dbd, also getting into dbd's overarching cosmic horror lore is not exactly as straight forward as linear stories are to get into as DBD's lore deals with concepts such as

    • Time working differently and non-linear inside the Entity's realm than it does outside it, so anyone and anything from any time, reality, universe and fiction can exist at the same time and at the same place without problem.
    • What's fictional in one world is real in another and vice versa.
    • Every character that has ever existed is inspired by a previous existing alternative version of themselves and they themselves will have another alternative version who's existence is inspired by them and so on.
    • All artists having a hidden third eye that they unknowingly uses to look into different realities to see things that they bring back to use themselves for things such as Art, Music and other things for entertainment, some able to utilize it more than others.
    • Overlaps/Rifts into the Entity's realm leaking into other terras/worlds throughout the different universes as supernatural hotspots caused by the Entity's presence wherever it has been.

And those are just to name a few examples of the themes and concepts dbd's lore in general deals with.

However as far as your question goes, yes the Legion comic is canon to the playable Legion lore according to Mathieu Cote in his interview with Slasher Radio.

Very late edit because some reddit thread has linked to this thread in relations to tomes: Tomes are NOT alternative versions of the characters, all multiverse aspects of the lore is solely confined to the npc tomes only. Tome inconsistencies between it and the base lore is sometimes (but not always) just bhvr not having quality control check of their lore to maintain continuity.

In terms of Legion's tome, it very well could be a case of such, however given that the entire story is from Julie's perspective and with her taking focus along with Frank in the cinematic, it's equally possible that the reason for the inconsistency of the cinematic is because it's told from the perspective of an unreliable narrator.

I guess even if it is a multiverse there could still be a canon. It’s like the world of DBD is A multiverse but it’s not THE multiverse if that makes sense…

Thanks, really that link to Matheiu Cote is just perfect, that's the definitive yes she's wanting.

And yea, the whole multiverse thing is why I had a hard time giving her a simple yes or no. Is it canon that Susie was in Chinatown and murdered some random guy using a jeweled knife she stole along with a Year of the Rat hoodie? Yes, in as much as that's one of the many worlds that The Entity is able to draw from. Did The Trickster perform at the Fire Moon Festival? Did Jane attend the Fire Moon Festival? Did a Samurai turned Demon known as The Oni attend it? Yes, somwhere in the multiverse!

And yea, the "third eye" is why we can have Jill Valentine, a real person, and also Feng Min cosplaying as her, Jill Valentine one of her favorite video game characters. (How much I don't like the "equal opportunity" Feng Min cosplay skins aside, they do at least make sense in the overall DBD multiverse lore.)
