Everything is meaningless, my daughter.

Perhaps this is due to larger and higher-quality projects, such as ac mirage
well, or because they recently released almost the most problematic killer in recent years-an alien
At first, when they came out, they accidentally turned him into a killer without punishment for poor use of the ability-which made playing against him simply unbearable.
Besides, an alien is not an alien...have you ever felt that you played for/against a legendary monster when he was in your matches? I personally feel more like a wayward cat
Then they nerf him up after one week, which greatly disappointed the players
And we made 1 more bug, which made it unbearable to play for a very long time, which could also scare a lot of people away.
The exploit of lockers and the fact that they broke climbing through windows for a long time for female characters for whom most of the player base, which became unbearable because before that they reinforced the windows.
and the very fact of the existence of AFC and a bad rework of sm could well force some killers to leave the game
There are just a million reasons, but don't be afraid. I think in a month online will be good again

I don't think it's patches.
Baldurs Gate 3, Cyberpunk, Starfield, etc, etc. In addition, events in other games.
For example, BG3 eat every spare second of my free time, so I'd probably miss this midchapter (if only there was 30 hours in a day...)

Current survivor chase meta made playing killer a frustrating experience, resulting in killer players either swapping over to survivor or just taking a break.
This in turn, causes survivor queue times to skyrocket because 1 less killer player = 4 extra survivors in queue , and since queue times are now very high, survivor players also decide to play something else...
Quite honestly, the game's healthiest and most appealing state was that period between 6.1 and 7.0 where DH was gutted and MFT didn't exist yet.

I personally knew two people who played DBD and had over one thousand hours. They both quit around six months ago because in their words the game has too much "BS". They were both survivor mains and they cited tunneling, facecamping, and overpowered killers as their main reason. People talk about how difficult killer is and usually completely ignore how horrible the game is for survivors who don't play in a SWF.

Agree on that. You'd see lots of Lithe, plenty of Sprint Burst, and some Balanced Landing. Most survs used an Exhaustion perk, sure, but at least there was variety! Chasing as an M1 killers felt fine.
MFT is just not healthy. It's not interesting, fun or fair to go against for most of the cast. Like a stacked addons Blight or tunneling Wesker/Nurse
The fact that Nurse is top 10 played killers despite most of the playerbase being bad with her is telling. I've been playing her more after MFT.

Yep. Thats all it is.
Im sure it has NOTHING to do with the abysmal state of the game.

We've had some big games come out recently and dbd doesn't have much new going on.
Being at a low point doesn't really mean anything especially when next week is the Halloween event.

Oh hey, the newest 'game is dying' post just dropped.

well, at least this time theres any semblance of evidence...

It would be crazy if a 7 year old game wasn't losing players.
Look at the full steam history of DbD. For a few years the game stuck around 10k players, then had a decent boost in mid 2018, then it stuck with ~20k players till COVID, where it saw a huge spike in popularity. The game has slowly been shedding those players ever since.
Basically, there's going to be a lot of variance in the numbers, but DbD will over time lose its player base, but there's nothing in the recent data that indicates anything unusual.

Exactly this. Lots of good and popular stuff came out recently.
But I feel that people want to see the game dying and this is because they open Threads all the time about it. It is kinda sad.

Agree with this Baldurs Gate 3 its a live eater.
And i will go for Starfield and Cyberpunk after BG3.

I am amazed you point to alien being a problematic killer when we had skull merchant like 3 months ago.

At some point, the game started to lower the players expectation on new contents, updates.
Events are temporary, cosmetics & rifts mean nothing when you lose reasons to play.

Playing killer is stressful and frustrating, especially with how easy you can bully a killer. They have also made weak m1 killers even weaker making it mandatory to run heavy regression perks. Last few patches have made it even easier for survivors, and now with mft (and the newly ridiculously buffed background player), a lot of the killer options just aren't viable anymore. Game has turned the survivors into the power role, so there are less and less killers. That's why it's almost always 100% for killers. Since there's far less killers playing, survivor queues are going up. People don't like queues, so if they wait too long they stop playing.
Long story short, they made the most frustrating and stressful aspect of the game even more frustrating and stressful for a good number of killers (ie m1 killers with no chase power).

Some of the comments here make me think that new players wouldn't have survived old DBD, respectfully.

2 things can be true at the same time. It can be a bad and frustrating experience now, just as it was worse back then. You also have to keep in mind that back then everyone was relatively newer and less experienced back then, so survivors didn't exploit the broken things as good as they can now.

Imagine the forum outrage these days if players could heal up on the other side of a pallet stun, be mori'd after one hook, or be dribbled to that hook in the first place. We'd see pages upon pages on true infinites, permanently sabo'd hooks, old dark cow tree, and original Ruin.
I kinda want to see that actually. Legacy DBD mode when?!? 🤪😂

Please, have mercy.
I've already lived through that once.

Yep, Uni in europe just started back up for a lot of people, new semesters etc.

It's just Steam, albeit the drop is significant. So we can only go on Steam players with this data and merely assume what is happening with others.
There's many reasons, but I would say media may be one of the main reasons. A couple of streamers announced they were leaving the game and a majoroty of DBD videos were either focusing on salty experiences, or at least felt moreso than usual. The atmosphere has certainly been darker than usual.
Also, a few new big games came out on Steam, so many would be playing those more.
What surprises me is that DBD had arguably one of the biggest licenses it ever had, yet it resulted in a loss of players, when every recent license (at least since Silent Hill) has had major gains, even if player numbers fell after. This is a really puzzling aspect, since it should have pulled.
Bizarrely, "Alien" could be the first time a licensed chapter has been a failure, despite being a pretty good quality chapter, at least from the perspective of Steam. That's the worrying aspect, rather than the lowest average number. The peak player number is lowest since April 2023, so that's not so bad.
