audio crackling on usb audio interface

I'm using a USB audio interface for sound ouput and upon certain interactions in game (like unhooking or doing a generator) a significant amount of crackling and audio distortion are added to the mix. This was not happening when I was using the regular built in audio drivers (realtek).
