Body-blocking exit gate - Hawkins

Played a match where I couldn't find hatch so I decided to go to the gate I knew was open only to find the killer alternating between both sides of the barrels placed at the entryway to the gate area. There was no way around the killer and there wasn't enough time to go across map and open the other gate.

Probably happens infrequently in the grand scheme of things but why even design this area this way?
