Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Would you ever consider a Touhou collaboration?

You see, I am a massive fan of both Dead by Daylight and Touhou Project, and sometimes, I wonder if it’s ever a possibility to see the two come together in some way.

While I find it difficult to imagine the beloved characters of Touhou entering the fog as entities, I do think that licensed cosmetics are a very plausible approach to a collaboration. For a couple of throw-out-there ideas, it would be a dream come true to see cosmetics designed around the various characters in Touhou, either as a sort of cosplay (ex. Feng Min’s Jill Valentine cosplay), or shirts that have the designs of the Hifuu Club albums or the various games (ex. Iron Maiden shirts); I personally would love to see Remilia Scarlet in particular, as she is my absolute favorite, however, being a long running series, there are multiple games (~28 official games, including spin-offs), literature, albums/countless songs, and characters (well over 180+) that you can use as material for many additions.

Unfortunately, I doubt this is a consideration, or ever will be a consideration due to the technically “niche” nature of ZUN’s works, despite being seen and loved in almost all corners of the internet, whether people know it or not. ZUN seems to be an open minded and approachable sort, working with and interacting with many fans and creators so, I have high hopes that, if you do consider reaching out to him, it will be a positive experience.

That’s pretty much it. This has been constantly pestering me the past few days and occasionally throughout the years and finally needed to get it off my chest.

I would love to hear your thoughts!

straight anime would be difficult. Reimu doesn't really fit in dbd. like the ability would be a giant blue bowling ball marble or Rainbow color explosive magic. it just doesn't fit. The same can be said for Marisa rainbow giant beam or Flandre.

I agree, hence why I said it was hard to imagine them being actual entities in the game. It also wouldn’t really fit to see them killing or surviving in the game (despite most of the yōkai and other types of species being dangerous and or deadly to humans). That is why I feel like, if it’s ever considered, the cosmetic route would be the most fitting and likely; Seeing some of the survivors (maybe some killers) cosplaying as Touhou characters are a fitting way to include them, as they’ve done it in the past. The games and literature aside, ZUN is also an incredibly talented composer, with music beloved by many (the series only exists because ZUN wanted to compose for video games, but had no way to, so he created his own games), so, simply having t-shirts of his albums or the games is another avenue that would fit in the game, like Iron Maiden. Examples below.

On a side note— I feel like it’s important to clarify that it isn’t ‘anime’ but, I understand what you were trying to get across regardless. In the theoretical chance that they COULD be characters, there is a lot more material they can use for those characters alone than the examples you provided that could definitely fit. For example, Reimu, being a survivor, could very well have a perk that makes use of her barrier spellcard to seal off a vault from the killer for a short time (with restrictions ofc), like the anniversary event. Survivors that could actually work would be Maribel Hearn and Renko Usami for many reasons I won’t go into detail here. There are many killers that could work, as a lot of the characters DO kill or harm humans, but again, I feel like it’s uncharacteristic to see ZUN’s creations explicitly attack and kill survivors, and on the survivor end, be hunted by killers.

trickster is like closest thing to anime in dbd and when he was first put into the game, it was stated that he doesn't belong in horror just because he's anime art focused. Scarlet flandere is vampire but that is as far you get towards horror in touhou.

the best i can see is skins like attack on titans. reimu wears red a Japanese shrine maiden costume. marisa wears like black robe costume. Scarlet flandere wears like a white costume. if you would go further into touhou, you could include patchouli which wears a purple robe and Sakuya that wears like kitchen maid costume. I can see skins being possible but not playable characters.

Vitorio that guy from Knight chapter, he has a perk called potencial energy and it has magical circle type effect, so maybe they could more magic perks with magical circles with some effect. Like for example, a magical circle trap that a killer set off and this makes them 5% slower when they're in circle. Perhaps another Magical circle perk could be that a killer walking into the circle is flashlight blinded for 2 seconds for next window vault they do. The final perk inflicts blindness on the killer for 30 second duration.

If they were making perks, it would likely be Patchouli's magical book, like spell-caster themed. Like I said, touhou is way anime-focused which is not horror focused.

There are a few points that I’d like to prod at:

    1. Trickster has sparked a lot of debate regarding whether or not he “fits DbD”. With these debates, there have been countless arguments in favor of him fitting in the game, some referring to out of place and silly cosmetics, some bringing up the point that it’s a specific horror archetype (I don’t remember the name of it), and the fact that he has aspects in his story that make him worthy of the horror genre.
    2. AoT cosmetics are the closest thing in the game to anime, as it IS one, and Castlevania being the second closest, so Trickster feels like a cherry-picked example.
    3. There are plenty of potential horror aspects in Touhou if you delve deep enough, they are literally based on folk and mythological creatures, primarily Youkai, which are, in essence, usually horrifying. (The Oni is in the game, which is a Youkai)
    4. There are, as stated, well over 180 characters in the series and ~28 games, but you are only mentioning half of the cast of ONE game when there is a lot more material to work with. Hell, you aren’t even mentioning Rumia, who is from the same game, who arguably has more potential for horror as a man eating apparition that actively hunts for food than Flandre Scarlet, which, on a side note, I think you are confusing for Remilia (“white costume”)?
    5. The potential for magic perks span beyond Patchouli, as there are multiple magicians and forms of magic (I.e. spellcards, innate abilities, etc.), just fyi.

With all that being said, I still agree with the fact that they wouldn’t fit as actual characters, I just wanted to point out and clarify some of the points you’ve made. As I mentioned previously, there is a TON of material to work with, and you can make it work in so many ways, it just requires a little bit of brainstorming, which is why I’m happy to see you discussing this with me. All in all, it’s just something I wanted to put out there because if I don’t do it, probably nobody will. Thank you for taking the time to read this

Sudden thought: Charms of the characters could work too. I was originally thinking Fumo charms but that type of plush is manufactured by a third party but, they could do some sort of marketable plush charm. That’d be cool

    Maybe even banners and emblems.
