Realm Repeat Prevention: A Good Idea That Needs a Rethink

First, I appreciate the thought behind this change. Having more diverse map gameplay is a great idea. However, if you dig a bit into the implementation, you can see this change would actually create less diverse map gameplay in the long run. My alternative idea maintains the spirit of the change while keeping map gameplay diverse.

THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE

Long-term, you will see maps in multi-map realms LESS often with this change, and maps in single-map realms MORE often. Here are those realms for reference.

Multi-map realms:

Autohaven, Coldwind, Crotus Prenn, Macmillan, Ormond, RPD, Swamp, Red Forest, Badham, Withered Isle (Greenville/Garden of Joy), Yamaoka Estate, Borgo, Dvarka Deepwood (Toba/Nostromo).

Single-map realms:

Midwich, Eyrie of Crows, The Game, Haddonfield, Dead Dawg Saloon, Hawkins, Lerys.

WHY WOULD WE SEE SINGLE-MAP REALMS MORE?

Currently, you can’t play the same map twice in a row. With the new change, you also won’t be able to play a map from the same realm back-to-back. This might sound fine, but here's the problem: single-map realms like Midwich are completely unaffected by the new change, while multi-map realms like Autohaven are penalized. If you play Wrecker's Yard, now all the other Autohaven maps (Gas Heaven, Blood Lodge, etc.) are also locked for the next game.

For the average player, this means you’ll see less of your favorite realms (like Autohaven or Macmillan) and more frequent trips to polarizing single-map realms like Midwich or Lery's. I don't see this as a positive change.

ALTERNATIVE IDEA

I have an idea that accomplishes the desire to have diverse map gameplay without boosting the chances of single-realm maps. Instead of realm repeat prevention, make it where the past 3-4 maps cannot be repeated for anyone in the match.

This system treats all maps equally, regardless of realm size, so maps like Midwich don’t get an unintentional boost, while ensuring players experience a diverse set of maps. It also avoids unnecessary restrictions, like banning Greenville after Garden of Joy just because they share a realm.

TLDR

BHVR's proposed Realm Repeat Prevention system reduces the chances of popular maps in multi-map realms while increasing the likelihood of polarizing single-map realms like Midwich and Hawkins. Instead, consider banning the last 3–4 maps played for each player and removing realms from the equation entirely. This approach better achieves the goal of maintaining map diversity. LMK if you agree
